Have you been to Reno lately?

Now that spring weather has arrived ( at least in Reno ) the biggest little town in Nevada is going great guns in building their railroad trench.
They have adopted Jerry Lewis’ philosophy: " Don’t raise the bridge, lower the river."
Consequently, they are digging a trench through downtown Reno that runs right behind the casinos. The casinos will be on street level and the railroad will pass through town below in a trench.
In my opinion I would rather see a “Paint Your Wagon” finale and have the casinos sink into the ground and rails remain overhead.
Grade crossings are always a matter for discussion in every town. This is Reno’s way to address it.
What are they doing in your town? What do you think of Reno’s solution?

I know what you might think: Reno has the gambling money to finanace such an expensive undertaking. You are right, of course. With good weather ahead, Reno hopes to have trains in these trenches by Thanksgiving.

Completion of the Trench will mean more trains over Donner Pass. GREAT!

There are several places along interstate 80(over Donner Pass) where you can watch Amtrak and freight traffic. The Amtrak train looks great photograhed against the mountain as it passes along the Truckee river.
