Have you ever?

Have you ripped up sections of track to re-do them after you saw something better or you weren’t happy with what you had so you thought you’d improve on it?

Am I alone with this or is there others that have gone through this?
Share you’re experiences with the group! [:)]

Good question. No, I’ve never torn out any track to re-build cause I saw somthin’ better.
But I have re-done many sections of scenery after seeing stuff so inspiring, I had to attempt to copy it. I think these new areas are a vast improvement over what it used to be.

Yeppers, done that. More so because my old layout, while entertaining, wasn’t all I felt it could be. Hopefully my efforts on the new one will pan out as expected.

Had to rip up and start over due to 3 moves and first child being born. Also redone things not done right the first time.
Enjoy

[:D]Of course I have!!! I admit it!!! I’m not perfect!!![:D]
~~ whew, glad THATS over!!!~~~[;)]
It’s all part of the learning curve!
Track that derails everything that doesnt weigh a ton, [banghead]curves with kinks in em,[:(!]switch arrangements that make unneccessary switch moves possible,[censored] makes everyone a better modeler.
As a friend of mine tells me "I used to be a Spert, now I’m and ex-spert![(-D]

I have done stuff that I thought was very good at the time I did. Later though after my skills have progressed and moved on I redid them becasue I looked at it and thought “I can do better than that.”

Yes, I have ripped up stuff. I had to rip up roadbed because I did a poor job ballasting it. It looked better after that, but then I discovered that you are supposed to ballast once the track is laid (don’t laugh, I’ve already kicked myself enough for it). I might rip it all up, or I might live with it and ballast over everything (I didn’t like the original ballast color).

Glad I’m not alone…for all it’s worthed.I’ve torn everything up twice so far as I wasn’t at all pleased with the results, and even before any scenery had been done.Trying to obtain a satisfactory trackplan in limited space is quite a challenge,so what I did is laying tracks and have trains running.Design flaws quickly became obvious.

I’m still a beginner so I believe I’ll have to do the same with scenery at times, rebuilding to do better…Great hobby, isn’t it?

I have redone my track a couple of times, to make them smoother and cleaner…

When I helped my brother remake his N-Scale track, he wanted to just do a simple roundabout. I got him to put in a couple more curves and a siding in. And I had to pull more than a few staples to relay the track [:D]

Mostly my rip-ups are because i mis-wired a line or something like that. My two recent fixes were adding some styrofoam for bridge abutments to fit the beams and widening a curve that is still way too tight (it was like 17’‘, now im lucky if its 21’')

I voted fourth because I have never laid track yet, even though I have most of the benchwork.

All too often! I would have to say 50% (30’)of my main line has been redone do to issues of misallignment and poor ballasting. It’s one of my biggest bones of contention and what has held me back from bigger and better things.

Dougal if you read this remember this it’s a good answer for job interviews as well as saving you grief in life.

Doing it Right means
First time
One Time
Only time

Have fun!

Been there, Done that, Got the tee shirt! It’s nice to know I’m not alone in this. Several large sections of my layout have been ripped out and redone. Most to increase curve radius and turnout frog numbers to better acommodate certain steam locomotive models and for a better appearance. Some have been changed to more accurately model the prototype track arrangement as it existed in my time period. I have one more section to redo, increasing curve radius and frog numbers and then I’ll be good to go.
Have Fun,

“…after seeing what someone else has done?” - No. I spent 4 mos and 26 generations of plans to come up with what I want for the space I have. I started track planning in Feb 03 and bought the first lumber for benchwork in June.

When my layout is finished I want to enjoy running the trains. I have put a lot of time and effort into making sure the sub-roadbed is flat and supported correctly - no bounce (which I learned about here on the forum) - and that roadbed and track are laid without kinks (learned how from the forum) or bad connections (again, learned from the forum). Working slow, checking and rechecking before each step I take has eliminated the need to tear apart anything. While I’m building, if I’m not sure what to do, I stop, come to the forum, and search for the answer. If I don’t find the answer by searching I ask the question - there are a whole lot of very knowledgeable people here that have bailed me out before I make a bad decision.

Yes I am eger to run trains, as most of us are, but reading all the horror stories about derailments and “tearing up” what you just put down, sometimes destroying the stuff you just purchased, I am being patient, working diligently and hope to only do it once. I have been told that if you give the hardest job (doin’ it right the first time) to the laziest person (me) he will find the easiest way (come to the forum) to get it done.

An expert I’m not, a sponge I am. I come to the forum daily to soak up knowledge from those who know. Thanks to everyone that share there knowledge and experiences to help those of us that need the help!

Two steps foward…One step back. I seem to work very slow on a moderate size layout,so there are times when I think a section is finished and I’ve done the best I could-then they come out with new, improved products,or I find a better way or my skills improve.
It’s starting to get frustrating!

I have torn my layout up at least 4 times but for none of the reasons listed. Most of the time it was because I wanted to change due to the way the room is laid out. I’m fairly happy now with a 17 x 5 1/2 layout that can expand easily. I’ve never rebuilt due to something I had seen that someone else has done. After building my first Atlas plan I have freelanced ever since.

It amazing to me that everything adds up on the computer, print out looks good, measurements add up, go to lay track and “what the heck happened…?”

had an idea for a layout, but could not quite get it to come in a layout?

I have riped up and changed parts of my track a few times. Mostly to be able to have more industry’s on the layout

3 time becuase iwas just not happy with it
