Have you modeled your train room?

Just in case you are wondering, I have been watching some model train DVD’s. That’s where the question I posted yesterday came from. Same guy but a different DVD was going through operations in his train room.

The DVD I looked at today has the same guy strongly recommending to build a scale 3D model of your train room BEFORE you do any layout building. Now just WHO has time and/or desire to do something like that?? His work was very detailed, and looked nice. But really ???

don did he mention hes on medication for a too active mind by any chance.

Clearly he is bored and or his pockets may be to full thus he has a need to spend money on stuff that one might argue is unneeded…

John Allen. Gorre & Daphetid.

He modeled his layouts, not necessarily the room too.

I did see a model of the proposed trail room in the San Deigo Model Railroaders link in the Sunday Photo Fun, but I guess that’s different since it’s a club rented space. I wouldn’t do it before I built my layout. That’s a waste of train running time.

Fairly common practice on the scale side of the hobby. My blueprints were the next thing to a 3-D image.

I have a model scenery book by Dave Frary (it is actually very useful) where he discussed making a 3D mockup of your layout prior to construction. There is a picture with a Ken (of Barbie fame) doll standing next to the “layout” The author indicated that this will allow you to get a better idea of how the layout will be visualized by visitors. It seemed like a bit much to me but, if I were planning a really large layout, it does make some sense.

John

Don,

I built a 1:1 scale model of our layout in the layout room. I liked it so much, I never built the real layout! [:D]

NOW THAT’S MY KINDA MODELING !!!

And a very impressive one as well !!

The club i am in has multiple models of our new layout. It is a great way for members to try out there idea’s at home or before the other idea’s contaminate theirs.
