Having trouble printing an article from the Archives

Hi gang!

I am trying to print an article from the August 2011 MR about automatic turnout control for yards using Tortoise switch motors, pages 58 to 61.

Here is the problem: I have been able to print the first page and the last page of the four page article, but printing pages two and three defies me. I can get a view of the second page but when I try to print it the page comes up blank. Same thing with the third page.

Believe me, I have tried everything that my limited mind can think of.

I’m sure the solution is obvious, but unfortunately not to me.

Help!?! Please!

Dave[:(!][|(][banghead][banghead][banghead]

As you can probably tell, I’m really ticked off right now. I’m paying money for access to the Archives and it’s not working as it should.

Hi, Dave

At least you can view the pages!

After waiting fifteen minutes this is all I can see.

If I scroll back maybe a dozen pages a few of the images show up… no text.

Something is fishy with the internet today. Many of my usual sites are acting very strange! A little while ago Ebay pages would load but there were no active “buttons” displayed!

Odd indeed. I hope you get the pages you need.

Happy Thanksgiving, BTW [Y]

Ed

EDIT

A few minutes after I wrote the above, I closed the MR site and reopened it. Had to log-in again.

Then I was able to get to the print page and selected the four pages, which also show the print icon, as shown:

You mentioned that yours comes up blank. The computer screen OR do you mean that four sheets of paper pass through the printer and the middle two are not printed?

EDIT II

OK, so I continued after selecting the FOUR pages as shown above, clicked on PRINT and the printer dialog popped up and I clicked OK…

SIX pages spit out of the printer! And same as your results, I get page 58 and I get page 61 printed, then I get four pages with a header and footer printed on the sheet.

Now I’m back to mostly blank pages through the whole issue with an occasional photo on random pages [^o)]

There must be some server problems at RealView Digital in Sydney.

Dave - When you see it on your screen, can you see the whole page in one view? You might try your ‘PrtScr’ button, then open a blank document page and CTRL V it into the document.

Ed:

You are experiencing exactly the same thing as I did, although my printer only spit out two blank pages with the header and foot notes.

Paul:

I’ll give the ‘print screen’ option a try. Thanks

EDIT:

I was able to print the pages by using a screenshot, but they come out too small to read the details in the diagrams.[banghead][:(!]

I just tried again, Dave. Same results. Then I picked a random issue, October, 2011 and only a few pages were visible. Most had a black X box in them.

Some pages had random images with little or no text, other pages were text with no images.

It will be pretty tough for Kalmbach to talk me into renewing the archive again. I can only access it on I.E. It will not open in Chrome at all.

Sorry…

Ed

Same here!

Thanks for your help.

Dave

I’m having the same issue (bad pun). tried it on desktop (Mac OS Sierra) using Safari, Chrome, and Firefox. Cover and 1st page of an issue usually render, after that it’s mostly blank pages with an occasional random photo. Tried it on iPad and Fire tablet, same result. Hope someone at Kalmbach can shed some light on this, or at least let us know they are aware of it and working on a fix.

Whoever hosts this for Kalmbach (I think it’s Zinioo) is definitely having some bandwidth issues. Doesn’t matter what browser I use.

On my iPad I don’t use the web site, I use the MR Archive app. That appears to be loading the issue in question just fine, if a bit slower than usual.

Good Luck,

Ed

We’ve asked the company that hosts the Archive to look into it. I’ll keep you informed.

Thanks Steven.

Dave

They’re in Australia? They much have just switched to NBN…

(Aussies will understand, plus I follow and participate on the EEVBlog forums for electronics, hosted in - you guessed it, Sydney, by one Dave Joones. Actually, the forum is hosted on a server out of Texas, but Dave is in Sydney. He’s had several YouTube videos talking about the NBN initiative in Australia)

When I try to use the app, all issues have a lock icon. Click an issue, it brings up a login dialogue. Enter credentials and it brings up what appears to be an error window that’s blank on top with an “OK” option below. Can’t access anything. The app needs a major UX overhaul anyway. Need a way to access older issues by year, not scroll endlessly from the most recent issue.

Hi Drumguy:

I don’t have that problem. When I open my Archives I get a list of years down the left side of the page. All I need to do is click on a year and the 12 issues pop up on the next screen. The problems occur after that point.

I guess that if different people are having different problems then the Archives really do need a lot of work.

Dave

He’s talking about the iOS app. Mine seems to work fine, it stores my login info just fine. But yeah, the endless scroll to get to the older issues has GOT to be changed. I started reading at issue 1 and was that ever a pain. You don’t have to wait for the screen to fill, it does keep right on scrolling.

The concept as it is now is fine for a magazine that’s only been around for a few years, but something that goes back as far as MR needs to at LEAST scroll by year and show 12 issues at a time. Or just let you key in year and month. I’d even take the scroll as it is now if you could enter a year and month to jump to. It’s like the recall stack on a DCC throttle. Worst case, 4 digit address, you press 6 buttons total to select ANY loco. If the recal stack is 5 or more, you’re already hitting more keys to pull up a loco than to just key in the address straight up.

Yup, I was referring to the iOS app. Online archive appears to be fixed now (thanks for the quick action, Steve!). App is still broken, no surprise there until we see an actual app update. I’ve rarely used the app, mainly due to the endless scroll issue, but also because the online archive has a very useful search function. Seems to me the app could be built to mimic the online archive without a whole lot of fuss.

Well, THAT’S good news! I just accessed the Archive for the very first time using Chrome. Up until toady I had to open Internet Explorer in order to get to the Log In page.

I’ll be browsing past issues more frequently, I’m sure. Haven’t tried the print functions as yet…

Kudos, M-R!

Ed

I use the iOS app to read the new issue when it comes out - I only have a digital subscription, and it’s a nicer reader than Zinio.

–Randy

I’m digital only too, and agree, the app seems to be a better reading experience. And oddly, latest issue seems to show up on the app a day or two before Zinio or online archive.

Printing from the archive has been wonky for several weeks now. I contacted customer service and they said they would look into it. That was a couple of weeks ago. Same result regardess of browser or printer used, blank pages with a line across the top.
