I just wanted to drop a note and let everyone know that if you get the National Geographic Channel, they are having a special on Grand Central Terminal tomorrow night starting at 8:00 PM Eastern. My Digital cable guide says it comes on at 6:00 PM Mountan and repeats again at 9:00. Just thought I would let people know so they can’t say “DARN I missed it”
DARN I missed it. I have Dish Network and Cox Cable, but neither one carries the National Geographic channel. But I do get 3 train shows every week on RFD-TV so maybe that makes up for it.
Thanks James, I caught the preview for this one the other day, and for once it is a channel I have. Of course it goes up against Survivor on CBS, but the replay at 10 PM CST is very doable, so I’ll be watching.[;)]
Thanks James! I saw the ad for it on a couple of different channels recently. National Geographic Channel is one of my favorites. That and about 3 other channels are the only ones that I ever watch (out of the hundred or so that I get on Cable). I will make a note to turn on the Idiot Box tommorow night.
I think this first aired last week, I was going to tape it but forgot. Looks interesting, oddly enough the History Channel did something last week on Grand Central too.
Ray, I’ve never liked the term “idiot box” as a substitute for television. The device is only as smart or stupid as the programming content watched. With all the channels available today, it is possible to make it a good source of information and entertainment, as is evidenced by tonight’s show. (I’m agreeing with you.)
“Idiot box” dates back to a time when programming choice was a lot more limited. If I was stuck with only the networks, I would probably call it that too. I too am a fan of more intellectual content like the History channel, Discovery, TLC, A&E, NGO, DIY, and the like. I also like sports and movies. I always leave something on as background noise when I’m working on my layout.
I’ve never totally convinced my father that the box itself is not to blame. However, he does enjoy the morning news as a supliment to his daily paper.[;)]
I will have to check this out. National Geographic channel is the highest channel number wise on our system, so I will get to see it. I just hope it’s good.
I just watched “Inside Grand Central” on the The National Geographic Channel. It had some very interesting points and I learned some things, but they could have easily given the information in 1/2 the time. In addition it had many opinions stated as facts, and many inaccuracies. So much for National Geograhpic’s reputation of getting things right. I was amazed that they were talking about the history of the New York Central Railroad and Vanderbuilt while showing pictures of Colorado Rio Grande narrow gauge!?!
I agree Rad, two hours was very draggy. I certainly wasn’t into all of the terrorist and police stuff. Even some of the restoration depictions were a little dry. I swear I have seen much of the material in a one hour show, Trains Unlimited or Modern Marvels perhaps?
Scale of 1 to 10: 6.5 For those who couldn’t watch, don’t feel too bad.
I watched it, and I agree with Elliot, it was about a 6-7. It was okay, and I did learn some things I didn’t know, but two hours was too long.
I loved the Fast Motion Rio Grande footage though, it added a “Huh, what’s that doing here?” element to the show. And the Footage of the New York Central and Penn Central Covered Wagons was great. But otherwise, I’d say it was so-so.
I watched it and thought it was basically good. It wasn’t a two hour show though… there was only 15 minutes worth of information on it. They managed to extend it to two hours… LOL The rest of the time was commercials, photo ops of people with the camera going round and round them, or rehashes of what you already saw (a common extender today on most shows), or time spent telling you what you are going to see after the 8 minutes of commercials that are next. (Big Boy, that is why I still call it the “Idiot Box”) I prefer to spent time working on my models!
