Cool nice sight!!! Loco Man

One day several years ago when I was working in downtown Pasadena, I was leaving the Den of Servitude I called work at the time and thought I heard a steam whistle, nah, it couldnt be…wait, there it was again, thats definitly a STEAM locomotive whistle !!! Well I was in my car and racing down California Blvd heading towards the Santa Fe station up on Del Mar, driving with the window down I could hear the whistle quite distictly now. Sure enough as I came towards the tracks on Arroyo Blvd…THAR SHE BLOW’S !!! Big Black 4-8-4 whistle going almost constantly…It was Santa Fe 3751 slowly making her way up towards the station. Thinking on it now it must have been part of her innaugural run! Well I dont want to say I drove like a foaming crazed railnut, but I beat the train and just about every other car in Pasadena to the station, luckily found a stall and got over to the station before 3751! She was putting on a show, letting her wheels slip and spin as she made here way into the station. If I remember right she didnt stop but went on thru slowly…close enought to touch…as they say. Unfortunatly I had no camera, and continueing the chase down the 210 was out of the question due to the horrible traffic that time of day. So I watched as the vintage excursion coaches rolled out of site and went home. Quite a memorable experience I must say.

Today, the tracks are gone, the Gold Line Metro now operates on the ROW , but I’ll always have the memory of seeing 3751 rolling by whistle blaring, wheels spinning, and a wearing a big Chesher Cat grin as she went by…[:D]

WOW!!! what an amazing story vsmith! In My Neighboring cities there is a big freight yard and when u are up close “trespassing as most like too call it” you can actually see where the old turn table was and where the roundhouse stood. unfortunatly its not there anymore. but boy do i wish it was!
