Heavier truck provision stripped from House transportation bill

There does seem to be at least a thread of sanity in DC.

Finally some comman sense coming from DC when it comes to transportation.

Republicans do not want to put larger trucks on the road, as they will discourage people from buying micro cars. Democrats do not want larger trucks as the check from the so-called trucking lobby has not cleared.

They finally did something right!

The current length limit for trailers is 53 feet, and the current total Gross Weight Limit is 80,000 lbs. Along with the weight increase will be a length increase, they have already tried to push for 57 foot trailers and failed. One thing is completely for sure we DO NOT need bigger and heavier trucks on our highways. I know, I’m a former trucker myself!

Still room for improval-they need to outlaw the use of retreaded tires. I have driven buses and their use on motor coaches has been restricted for years for safety reasons.

Wow, I love the railroad ind, but I’m also a truck driver and would have liked to see this pass, more weight=more tax revenue, more weight=more road tax, bottom line is, you haul more you pay more for doing that. I drive an 8 axle 65’ #105,000 truck, but with that comes higher taxes and so on, also according to fed bridge law my truck puts no more wear on roads then an #80,000 truck. Just my thoughts, Thanks

Commercial trailers of any length are a highway danger.
The decision should be based on private citizen car drivers’ safety first and foremost, before government starts concerning itself on road and bridge wear. Then the answer would be a resounding NO.
Question: are they approved now in New Jersey?

I as a driver am not for bigger trucks. Shippers and trucking companies are the ones pushing for this. Trying to squeeze more productivity out of drivers for less wages. Reminds me of an old Southern Pacific engineers response. “Uphill slow, downhill fast, tonnage first, safety last”.

As a Canadian driver that operates this long heavy stuff, I commend the U.S. D.O.T. for saying no. As one old trucker described a Super Train {they are those slow things chugging up a hill, or that pile of lumber scattered on the road, with a pile of iron laying in the ditch beside it}

Note to all- Not just the railroads tried to kill this provision- the majority of independent truckers and small trucking company owners also helped “derail” this bill. It would have only benefited the few largest carriers and shippers. As a trucker- I would not support this increase until licensing standards and driver training receive a MAJOR upgrade. This won’t happen until the American Trucking Association is willing to invest in driver training rather than technology that is iffy at best.

Well done US Congress - increased truck size in the US would increase pressure for larger trucks in Europe too. That is something that we folks over the pond can do without. It is encouraging to hear the pressure from the truckers is being resisted. www.nscalekits.com

As a trucker I’m glad this has happened. We do not need bigger and heavier trucks on the road.
I think this was something the LTL companies wanted so they can keep up with other non union LTL companies.

If you want to see what will happen to the roads just come to Michigan,trucks here run 150,000+ and the roads only last 5-10 yrs ask the truckers what state has the worst roads it always Michigan

Good for Susan more intermodal. The mass-momentum for 80,000 lbs. is way out there when you pass 42 mph. As for stopping distance? Also hot weather well rut the asphalt roads. No more heavy weight. NJ

sooner or later this is gonna happen! the more wheels they put up under it,the more weigh they’re gonna put in it!
