I happened to see this 8 truck, 16 axle monster being backed down on the Union Pacific tracks from St Francis towards the Port of Milwaukee on Friday March 9, 2007. So I went home and grabbed the camera. I don’t know what this car will be hauling but it must be “heavy”. In looking at some of the photos I took, I was able to see the Load Limit at 900,000lbs, WHEW, thats alot of tonnage.
Below are some photos of the KRL #162300 as it sits on the bridge over Washington Street on the southside of Milwaukee. Thats the Allen-Bradley clock tower in background. And a CNW caboose on the rear of the train.
KRL 162300 doesn’t show up on a trace–that car number doesn’t exist.
I suspect we’re looking at KRL 163200, and the information about this car has been cleverly concealed so folks like I don’t go around spilling the beans.
Carl, sorry for the “off subject” question, but did you ever manage to find out what the story was behind our mystery UP unit sitting for weeks on the J at Liberty St. in Aurora recently?
I guess I should learn how to type. I should have gone down to the Port of Milwaukee I suspect it is sitting down there somewhere. The car is KRL #163200 not as originally reported.
Also Yes that is a CNW bay window caboose at the end of the train. The Marsh Job which brought the car down always runs with a CNW caboose.
I saw one of those on friday begin pulled by a train but it was on. The Cp tracks that runn along 13th st here in milwaukee. I think it had the same was size of car in pictures above.
I can imagine that must be something to see a car with 8 trucks and 16 axles making its way through a curve.
What time did you see that CP train on Friday. It is possible that they interchanged the car with the CP at Washington Street, right where the car was spotted on the bridge. My photos were taken around 1pm.
I saw the train right around 2:45 or so maybe it was not the same car but sure looks like the same one. I saw it was a very long frieght train and this car I saw was somewhere in the middle of the train.
With a time of 2:45pm I would have to say that it was the same car. So thats why they had the car way down there. The UP dropped the car off for the CP to pick-up. That would have been interesting to watch. I don’t think the Washington Street interchange track is used much anymore.
Keith, I show the car going to the Port of Milwaukee at Jones Island; the record says nothing about CP. However, I’m not familiar enough with Milwaukee to know if there’s any significance to that particular location (I remember it for ferry slips).
Finally had a chance to get down to the Port of Milwaukee today 3-17. I did see the car it is spotted at the Heavy Lift Dock which is on the west side of Jones Island, near where the carferry dock used to be. The area is pretty much inaccessible so pics weren’t an option. Must be waiting for a big load when the shipping season begins.
Ok, here’s a question… Why doesn’t Kasgro’s reporting marks end with an X? (i.e. KRLX) Are they considered a railroad, or some other kind of non-private owner, or is their reporting mark old enough that it is exempt from the conventional private-owner marks?
And, has it been that long since I’ve been down to Jones Island? Guess so! Glad you caught this one, Keith…
Kasgro has a railroad line. I’m away from my sources, but it’s probably a small one with a connection to other railroads. They probably keep the equipment lettered or the railroad, as opposed to a private reporting mark, for some car-hire revenue advantage–someone more expert than I can confirm or refute this and perhaps indicate how big the advantage is.
I do not believe the car everyone refering to is the Schnabel, which is stored here in the harbor area. I am sure if it had been moved, I would have heard about it.
