Hi,
I have a Mantua 4-6-2 Heavy Pacific steam locomotive in HO scale. The original owner had broken the pilot off the assembly (it’s plastic) and had glued it back on, using an inordinate amount of glue.
When I took the time to carefully remove all of the glue, I found that 3 of the four brackets were cut off, so that I could not replace it. I’m trying to find a suitable replacement pilot assembly, preferably in something the B & O would have used on their P-class locomotives. I would like to try and use a brass or white metal casting instead of plastic.
I’ve looked in the Walthers on-line catalog, but can’t find anyone who makes such a pilot assembly. I referred back to my 1990 Walthers HO catalog, but none of the choice seem to be quite what I’m looking for. I would appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction.

We published an article on detailing this model back in March 1983, but the author, Charles Pettus, used the original pilot. The Cal-Scale no. 315 pilot is at least similar, although it represents a boiler-tube pilot and the B&O used flat stock for the pilot’s vertical bars. I don’t have a Precision Scale Co. locomotive parts catalog here at the office, but you might want to check that source. Another possibility would be Greenway Products, 139 Ramsey Rd., Ligonier, PA 15658, phone 724-238-6268, and on the Web at greenwayproducts.com.

Thank you, Andy. I appreciate the feedback. I’ll be checking that article and the websites you gave me. It’s going to be fun fixing this one up and I mean that sincerely. I’ve discovered that sitting down with a model can be relaxing - something my therapist can certainly feel is positive! Now if I could only get my layout up.
