Heavy snow on a large yard?

The question comes to mind while watching the Packers. How do you
guys keep the lines visible?

John

At times you dont You know you are a true railroader when you have switch broom in hand and you have to dig out the switch to get into a track Winter in Iowa You gotta love it GO PACKERS CNW FOREVER Larry

The last evening of our Polar Express event was run during a pretty significant storm. So much so that we were usually plowing at least some snow in both directions on our trips to the "North Pole (13 miles one-way). Since the plows on the locomotives don’t go all the way down to the rail, we could only see where the wheels had been - and sometimes not even that if there was any drifting going on.

We didn’t have to do any switching during the trips, but did have one switch to throw before and after, into our station siding. A slightly larger concern (other than the guy who had to sweep out and clear the switch, which I also had to do earlier in the day during a pilot run) was snow/ice in the flangeways at the highway crossings.

GO PACKERS!!!

GO GIANTS…

Yes, I am rooting for them. I really hope they beat dallas. The packers’ record in dallas has a [0] in the W column. If the giants win, they go to green bay, where the packers have a better chance of winning.

I wishing the same but I want them go all the way… I thought Packers were going to loose after the 1st quater peformance…but your defense came back and was able to hold them.

Wishful thinking…maybe next year?

preparation, smudge pots, portable switch heaters, every trackman you can find and a jet engine blower if you are lucky enough to find one. (plus forgiveness in your now blown budget)

Keep Dreaming![:-^]

In my case, the first car to roll into a track, if it gets through the switches safely, will indicate where the track is. It will not roll very far–the thicker the snow-pack (and the lighter the car) the quicker it will be stopped. A locomotive’s assistance will open up the track in most cases.

MC indicated the “cure” for most switches with fouled points. However, the jet causes more problems in our yard than it solves.

I was lucky I didnt see the first quarter… [:)]

and crongrats to your giants!

Thanks Amigo! Let’s see if the Packers could hold them.[%-)]

It will be a great game thats for sure. Romo is what, 0-2 in the post-season now? lol… great recoed to start that huge contract! You know, your fellow giants fans should have pooled some money together and bought jessica simpson a ticket, maybe it might not have been that close [;)] .

anyways, I do hope the packers win, but if they loose, I am rooting for the giants!!

Lets hope the patriots loose!

With your humidity and “wet” lake effect snow up over there, I can see what the problem is. You also have to have someplace for powder snow to go (ie-big open area, at Proviso not likely) to when it’s displaced. Noticed that all the “jets” were gone out of UP/Denver’s work equipment shops in Denver. Even the rotary “hanger queens” that are modified Kershaw Model 26 (old) ballast regulators are gone and I assume are out working until they (regulators) break when they suck-up worn brake shoes, dunnage, OTM, etc. and come back to Denver for major repairs in the spring.

Be prepared for a typical Green Bay January day next week. Here in Chicago it is supposed to be -6 Saturday morning so figure Green Bay to be three four degrees colder. The Giants better be prepared for the “Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field” and I expect we will hear it from the announcers at least 147 times during the game.

[#offtopic]

I seem (dimly) to recall that at one time Lambeau had sort of an electric heating pad under it, and if it was kept covered until shortly before game time, it would be mostly unfrozen until (at least) late in the game. Am I thinking of the wrong field, has it been removed or is that still there?

I would like to thank Jessica Simpson for her excellent work she’s did with Romo over last weekend. [bow] Now, we have the GIANTS going to see the Packers… Easy Game to win!!![4:-)]

Since my Cowboys fell short, I will be pulling for the Pack. But to be honest the winner is just going to be lambs for the Patriot slaughter. Sorry Guys. Maybe the Packers will prove me wrong, hope so.
