Heljan kits opinions?

Next month I will be purchasing the first structure kits for my empire (as long as I loose the books I am bidding for on eBay). Since I am very new at this I want to start with something cheap and relatively easy. After searching Walters on line I have decided that the N scale Heljan Grain Elevator and Feed Mill would fit my plans and my budget.

Has anyone had any experience with these or other Heljan kits? Are they reasonably good quality?

Many of Walthers structure kits are (or were) made by Heljan. From those I’ve seen, they are pretty good in HIO scale anyway. A good choice.

I’ve put together a few Heljan kits, both HO and N. I’ve been satisfied with each of them. The windows, doors and such are reasonably well proportioned. Like any plastic kit, spend a little extra time painting, weathering and detailing it and the appearance will be worth it.

I think way back I built that kit, been 20 years now, but I seem to remember the Heljan stuff went together pretty well, just you will want to paint them, the colors are rather garish [:0]

I am doing N scale, so if what Bob said about Walthers and Heljin, I have a few Wathers kits I have done, they go together pretty well also.

Thanks everyone. That is just the type of information I was looking for.

The pictures looked good other than the plastic sheen it all had. Painting and weathering is a must.
