Depends on what you’re using it for.

As a wetting agent for ballast / scenery material, 50% isopropyl alcohol it would probably do fine undiluted. For a track cleaning agent, I recommend denatured alcohol (full strength), which you can get at a hardware store (with the paint thinners).

I strongly recommend that you have a plan on paper (or your PC) before you begin, but in this hobby, I believe it is absolutely essential to learn by doing, and not be afraid to rip something out if it doesn’t measure up to your standard.

You’ll do much better – and this applies to your layout question too – if you can say, “Here’s what I did, I’m not too happy with the results. Any suggestions?” rather than just yelling “Help!”. Also, if you’re like most of us, you won’t even need to ask, because you’ll try something, then say “I should have done it that way.instead.”

As far as your layout is concerned, draw a scale plan of your room and make several photocopies of it. Don’t forget to allow for doors and windows. Then sit down and make a list of “givens and druthers”, in other words, things you HAVE to have on your layout, and things you WANT to have. This will include things like protoype railroad, era, industries, types of operations, etc. Then start sketching some ideas. Don’t worry too much about an exact plan at first, just throw some ideas on paper. Once you have something you like, make a scale drawing, using drafting tools, a template, or a computer assisted design tool. You can then ask specific questions along the way, rather than the general “plan my layout for me” types of postings. Layout desgin is half the fun anyway. But fundamentally, no one can tell you want on your layout how you like to run your trains, and what limitations (reach, aisle width, duckunders, etc.) you are comfortable with… Only you can answer that.
