Hey folks…long time lurker, first time poster.
I just thought I’d drop a quick note to say “hi” to you guys.
I’ve been interested in the hobby since I can remember. Both of my grandparents have/had model railroads that amazed me when I was a little boy. My grampa on my mom’s side has just picked up a DCC and sound equipped loco. That sealed the deal…I decided I gotta get back into this stuff. No more than a week or two after playing around with his set up I subscribed to MR (after several years without it) and bought more HO related books than I care to mention [:p]
I’m recently engaged and will very soon be the proud owner of a house with nice dry basement just begging for a empire of my very own.
I’m going to start off with the Turtle Creek Central 4x8 plan that MR did awhile back. I like the idea of a small shortline…exactly what I want to do.
The double deck track plan in the March '05 MR looks really good too. But I believe helixes and such is a wee bit out of my scope. Perhaps that’ll be my second layout.
Call me crazy…but I really want one of those Overland BQ23-7s for my shortline. They are ugly as sin…but go***hey sure are interesting!
Well…I’m sure I’ve changed the subject enough on you guys, so now that your sufficiently confused I’ll letcha go hehe.

BQ23-7? I remember those things! The Seaboard Coast Line (Family Lines) had them running around here in the Tampa area. The cabs were designed for crew comfort, but yes I remember me and the guys in the hobby shop saying “YUCK!”[:p] whenever we saw a picture of one. Tyco or Bachmann produced one in HO.
SCL eventually adopted the policy of not using them on the front of freight trains as crews were concerned about safety in a head on collision since these units lacked noses! They were all gone before the 90s as far as I know.

Another relative newby signing in. I also have been lurking and have learned much and from what I’ve seen, this is one of the best forums going. No condescension, just good friendly advice. I’m currently working toward my first layout with my first train in 48 years or so. I’m planning on doing the 4x8 layout (or a variation thereof) that is on the DVD that came with the Basic Trains (or something) magazine. I can’t find the darn thing right now but I’m sure you all know what I’m talking about. So far I have a station, platform, church and general store built. Next to build is the New River Mining Company by Cornerstone.
I’m planning on modeling a scene from western PA in the mid 60’s and have been doing some research so that my equipment is period correct. PRR mostly with some Pittsburgh & Shawmut rolling stock in the mix. Scale: HO. Brand new to the hobby. I am 57 years old and recently retired. I live in northern South Carolina. My profile is up to date but by no means extensive so I’ll add more as it comes to mind. Thanks to you all for the information you provide and I’ll try not to be a pain in the neck with the newbie questions. Cheers!

karlp635: I think that what you are thinking of is the “World’s Greatest Hobby” DVD. I’ve heard of it, but have never seen it. Several manufacturers offer track packs to allow you to build the layout in the DVD. The ones I know of are Kato, Bachmann and Atlas. Perhaps there are others. If you want an easy to set up layout, these track packs are pretty neat, since they include all the track needed to build that layout, and they are all roadbed track, if I’m not mistaken. I have the Kato set, which is the most expensive of the ones mentioned, but it is a very high quality product. I would recommend it if it’s something you can afford. I can’t speak for the other brands, though, since I have not tried them myself. Bachmann supplies the DVD with their pack, if I remember correctly. Kato does not, or at least it wasn’t in my package. I’ve had a keen interest in the hobby since I was rather young…probably around 5 or so. I’ve never really had a layout…just temporary ones that never lasted long. So…I guess that’d put me in the hobby for the better part of 19 odd years give or take. -

Simon, yea…she knows what’s going on. She’s been to my grandparents and uncles houses (they both have railroad china collections). Though she hasn’t seen my grampa’s layout. She’s seen me nearly drool over some of the sound clips on Broadway Limited’s website. She knows…she supports. I’m not sure she’ll get into it though [;)]
Well I finally found the magazine (my wife had it [8D]) that included the DVD. It’s “Model Trains Step By Step” and has lots of info for us newbies. I’m planning a variation of the 4x8 layout they show and since it will be semi-rural in theme, I would like to find an HO passenger car of small size since the track radius is 18". All of the passenger cars I’ve seen so far are much too long and would look weird IMO on this track. I suppose the best thing to do would be to start another topic with this subject. Thanks again!
