Hello Omaha, one of our locomotives is missing!

U.P. might want to check out the E.J.&E. siding just at the end of Old Ferry Road in Aurora, IL where they will find (at least as of 4:00 p.m. yesterday) U.P. unit 7220 (an AC44CW) sitting on the siding rusting to the rails (her prime mover is shut down)…here is her picture (not mine)…anybody know why she would be there and not running? Many of you might recall this is not the first time I have spotted a U.P. locomotive sitting for days on end on the “J” while many trains pass it by.

UP 7220

#2 traction motor locked up. It is waiting for an idler to be put in so it can be towed to Proviso

Thanks UP_North. Isn’t it wonderful how it usually only takes a matter of an hour or two (or in this case less than an hour) for somebody on this forum to come up with the answer to a rather hard question such as this one? [:D]

Omaha dispatcher eleven to the UP 7220 west, over… Omaha dispatcher eleven to the UP 7220 west, over…

Wake up Casey. I think someone is calling us.

I fixed that. I turned down the volumn.

Several yrs ago, BNSF issued a system form C order that they lost one of their engs and to be on the lookout for it.If memory serves me correct, I believe it was a 1000 series unit and that it may have been lost in Mexico. And no reward was offered.

I’ve actually heard of a number of occaisions where a railroad has “lost” a locomotive. Recently, CN lost one of their BC Rail SD40-2’s because it said “RCL” on the side of the cab. This was to denote that it was a remote control loco, and not to lead (it needed some repair work done to it). Ironically, it was on it’s way to NRE to get repairs when someone mistook RCL as the reporting marks. Apparently, it was lost on UP for quite some time, and went all over the place before it was returned to CN. Also, another time, someone (a scrapper I think) had bought a CN GP9RM, and spray-painted on the reporting marks. Somehow, this one also got ‘lost’ for a while, and decided to take the ‘scenic route’ to the torch.

About 10 years ago WC had a ‘lost’ SD45 roaming around on CSX. CSX records show that the ‘leased’ unit was returned, but WC did not get it. A note was issued on the rec.railroads newsgroup and it was ‘found’ in about 3 days(working a CSX train). CSX returned it with extra lease payments for the week it was gone! Amazing how well the Internet can work at times…

It just my eyes fooling with me, or is that a five-axle machine as pictured?

If that BNSF unit got lost in Mexico, Poncho Via probalble took in revenge for Generla Pershing chasing him.

Assuming that each visible wheel has an axle attached, I count six.

The rearmost (right end) is shadowed by the steps and the front one is hard to see behind the intervening weeds, but they’re both there.

Chuck

Blow up the picture then look at where the last axle should be.

Vandalism!!! [:O]

I clicked on the picture, all the wheels and what not are still there…

I know my eyesight may not be the best, but it definitely looks like a hole there to me. Maybe Mr. Photoshop did something with it. Or maybe my puter is having dizzy spells?

Is your computer an iron thief?

Well it sure seems to be a magician! There is just a cute little hole there where a wheel and little bell thingie should be - and it sure looks like it is all missing.

Maybe I should go lock the doors to keep the men in white coats out?

I see all the axles, but I can see where one might get the impression one was missing.

FWIW, one should not be able to see an axle. Axle ends, maybe, but the wheel should hide the axle.

It appears to me that the last axle AND wheels on the right side of the picture are missing. Would perchance that’s where the idler would be placed once it arrives? How well does a three axle truck truck with a missing end axle. (Sounds likes the old woodchuck tongue twister!)
