Hello

I am new to this board but but am both a avid hobbyist (HO Trains) & rail fan. I have a reference book that is dated summer 1979 so if any one needs info on long ago fallen flags you can contact me & hopefully I will be able to assist you

Welcome. Where is Colton Crossing - or should I ask what is a colton crossing? I am never sure on some of the names.

Yes, welcome to forums[#welcome]. Be sure to stop in at the Cafe and the Lounge, which are places of social gathering and also for sharing information. Ask questions and answer other people’s questions.

Colton Crossing (2-27):

Sounds like you have knowledge of the Colton and Southern California area, and have reference material.

Do you, by any change, have a map or know the route of the California Southern (predecessor of AT&SF) between Perris and Oceanside?

You picked, Colton Crossing, a super code name! You’ll probably get a bunch of viewers just checking out that name …

Mookie (2-28):

Colton, CA advertises itself (or at least it did) as the Hub City. It is at the crossroads of the SP and AT&SF lines in sunny California. A flyover is being built to separate the Transcon from the Sunset Route.

The above photos recently appeared in the “Sunset Route Two-Tracking Updates” thread.

Best,

K.P.

KP - I drug out my faithful Google map and checked on Colton CA. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I do know that area.

Had relatives in Anaheim (great visits there!) Hemet and Fullerton and my MIL lived in Whittier. Driver lived in Riverside and Corona area before he came to Nebraska and I have a friend living in LaQuinta.

Small world, indeed!

Thanx for the geography lesson. Finally, something I can relate to since I have been all around there.

Welcome to the Forum me lad! Jump in anytime and don’t be shy! The more the merrier! Looking forward to hearing from you again!

Eleanor Roosevelt welcomes you to the forum:

Welcome!

As noted, don’t be afraid to ask questions. We aren’t usually afraid to answer them! And you’ve got some experts and very experienced folk who frequent this forum.

If you ask a question that’s been asked before, we may well point you to another thread. There’s a bunch of them out there. There is a search feature, but sometimes you have to phrase your search just right or nothing will pop up.

Don’t forget to look over the terms of service. We’re pretty relaxed here, but we do mostly limit discussion to railroad topics (even on the ‘off topic’ threads). And there are several taboos - politics, religion, grafitti, and railroad bums. Believe me, you don’t want to know…

First and foremost, though, is to relax and enjoy!

K.P., what causes that jog in the track in the first picture you posted? That flyover certainly obscures the view.

Thanks,

I think we scared the poster Colton Crossing off

I don’t hear anything…

^~^

Mrs. Roosevelt is trying to listen as well…

Deggesty (3-1):

Hi Johnny!

If you look at the photo again …

… at the top, the right track aligns with the left track a little bit lower. They all jog to the right, and then jog back, so that the top right track aligns with the bottom left track. That alignment was the original straight single-track alignment of 1875 when the Southern Pacific line was originally laid.

Between the first top jog and the second, on the left, was once a Pacific Electric (PE) yard, and the then powers that were decided a switching lead was in order. They moved the mainline southward (rightward). After that switching lead was taken up, the mainline never was restored to its original alignment.

Before the Colton Flyover construction even started, and things were not revised in the area (like signals) …

… the old SP Colton Depot was by that track jog you inquired about.

Thanks, K.P. So, it was thought uneconomical to straighten the track when the yard was abandoned? How fast do the trains move through there? Yard speed? Is that a signal bungalow (in the first picture) that would be very close to the track if the jog were removed?

Mookie, I never thought that we were toxic; indeed, I consider the contributors to the threads to be, at worst, benign.

Please come back, Colton Crossing!

Maybe he thinks that since Eleanor Roosevelt is here, that zombies have taken over the site?

Maybe they have.

Where’s that pick ax?

Al Pearlman has it over there ------->
