help building work bench

Are there any plans out there for building the perfect workbench for painting, building, repairing, etc. The best way to hold bottles of paint, containers needed for parts, tools needed, best lighting, etc. ?
thank you.

I don’t know of any plans off the top of my head but I’m sure if your use the magazine search on the MR site you will probably find some in back issues. My main workbench is about 6’ feet long and about 1 1/2 feet wide and at the same height as a desk or table, my other workbench is made to work at comfortably while standing and has bookshelves under it. Both workbenches have fur downs with lighting that’s the same as on the layout with storage above. Pegboards are installed at each bench to organize tools and supplies. Electrical outlets are installed at each workbench and one close to the floor. I thought this would keep me organized and neat but things still get messy and cluttered. I’ve been happy with this setup though and it’s much better than the work areas I’ve had in the past. Not a plan but here’s a picture.

bwftex, very nice work area[tup], mine an old desk, home made steel covered table and one of those shoe cubby hole things you get at Kmat for misc. But it also works

I am convinced that the perfect work bench doesn’t exist. I have had many work areas over the years and what I have found is that a lot can work but the best have these features.

  1. Plenty of light from more than one direction.
  2. Comfortable chair.
  3. Drawers for tools, parts, etc.
  4. Large enough to spread out plans and parts.

Usually a desk with two lamps works best for me, but other setups can be good.

As bwftex said above, search the old magazines. There have been several articles over the years.

I bought a new computer desk at OfficeMax for $30.00 and it works out good.

Built this myself in garage where layout is. Ditto on lighting, space and plenty of drawers. On the left is my test track. On the right out of the picture is more storage. Have added electrical outlets on the bench on both sides since this pic was taken.

Thank you to all who replied. I already did a search of the old magazines already. I appreciate the pictures, please keep them coming. Thank you and have a great day!
