i’ve been building up my rolling stock collection a lot lately, and right now i’ve been focusing on trying to get some CNW covered hoppers. but the thing is, i’m after a certain type.
i have an FMC version and love it, but the ones i see in person look different. so i did some research and found that the hoppers i want were made by Pullman Standard, not FMC.
that being said, does anyone know if there’s a company that currently is making HO Pullman Standard covered hoppers in CNW paint? i’ve searched everywhere and found nothing.
those are nice and all, but they’re the wrong kind i’m afraid. the ones in the 180XXX as seen in the first link or the former CRIP ones are the ones i’m looking for. and intermountain is known for pricey models. and it looks like they dont have the green ones curently. for now, this will do. thanks
There are a few companies that make models of Pullman Standard covered hoppers with a capacity at or near what you are looking for. Unfortunately almost all are assembled and cost at least $30. Your only other option, that I see, is to buy some Athearn kits, strip the paint off, repaint, and decal them.
The Life Like Proto 2000 line has some of the very nicely detailed PS hoppers. The P2K hoppers are available assembled or in kit form. I have a few of the kit ones and they do take a considerable amount of time to assemble, but they do render an exquisite model. If you can find assembled ones for less than $30 I’d suggest you get them unless you absolutely love kits.
My suggestions for finding some not too expensive P2K kits is ebay. I don’t know your stance on ebay, but if you use it, here are some links for you to look at:
I’ve seen prototype photos of the Continental cars restencilled with CNW reporting marks. Like this one: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=294733. It all depends on your desire to restencil some cars. Well, hopefully you have some more options now and good luck.
The CNW P-S covered hoppers are mostly 4750 cu. ft. jobs. The only model that I am aware of is by Intermountain. They are pricey and fragile.
CNW also had FMC hoppers, the MDC/Roundhouse model. I like these. Not pricey, and not too fragile.
CNW also had some ACF 4600 cu.ft hoppers (172xxx series, IIRC), just like the Accurail models. The newer 4-bay Thrall cars (490xxx series) are not available, but Accurail did paint some of their 3-bays in this scheme.
ah thanks. i found athearn made a 5-pack of these PS hoppers in CNW paint, but has since discontinued it, along with the FMC 5-pack. i’m hoping they might make them again soon as this pack is EXACTLY what i want. even has 2 of the green ones, which are my favorites
yes i have one of the accurail ACF hoppers. i enjoy it. i know athearn used to make that thrall malt hopper you mention. i wish they still did. i see a lot of them on trains in this area.
Nobody makes the Thrall malt hopper (490xxx). The Athearn car is an older ACF car, for plastics.
The ACF 172xxx (Accurail 4600) were used for malt service in their day.
The FMC hoppers are nice. CNWHS sells one, the last car painted at the Clinton, IA car shop. MDC had some that were patches from co-op owned cars into CNW. BN also had a shedload of these cars, commonly used for barley to the malt plants. WP had some FMC hoppers as well.
I live on the UP Adams Sub, so I see most of the same trains.
Have you thought about making your own? You can get undecorated hoppers and with a little paint and a sheet of microscale decals, solvaset, and dulcote, you can build your own…chuck
