I’ve decided to install Kadee couplers on my freight cars. First problem is that i bought a super pack of couplers. Now many of my cars dont have a lid to the gearbox, the old style coupler just screwed directly onto the box. So I cant install the kadee’s into the gearbox. Do i have to shange the whole truck to install on these cars?
Second problem is i have a model power freigh car and for the life of me i cant figure out how to get the truck off. It loosk as if it has a plasticv rivet holding it in.
Any help would be appreciated.
I do not think you have to replace the entire truck. Kadee makes a cover with a screw hole, and these are probably avalible on kadee.com. I am facing the same delima and have been experimenting with different size screws, but I’m gonna ask my local hobby store manager if they have any suggestions on this. Hope this helps and I hope you will get the problem solved!
If your couplers are connected to the truck, these are Talgo trucks. What I’ve done, is cut off the coupler boxes and installed Kadees using their draft gear boxes. If you buy their conversion kit, it comes with a drill and tap for using 2-56 screws. And it looks more prototypical anyway. The Talgo trucks are good for long cars on short radius curves. I use a 24" minimum radius and have no problems with my heavyweight passenger cars with the couplers mounted to the body instead of on the trucks.
Sweet, good advice for me as well.
