Help!! Looking for info on non-modeled Ballast/Aggragate cars.

Hi All,

I got the new IC&E DVD’s & I saw a few cars that were ‘NEW’ to me! The first set, were a few side discharge cars that looked like 35 foot Clyindrical hoppers with their 1/4 top removed to be open gons. The ones in question have 2 side discharge chutes, & a large decal lettering ‘Gate Opening’ above the chutes. I’d really like to model these cars, as I had never seen them , & not aware of their purpose or history!

They were similar to this design (but stubbier, taller, & a 2 bay design):

In another DVD there is another short car that looks like a 28’ container on a high chassis. I don’t have any Ide what that was or what it was built to haul!

Both are painted in a color silimar to dark UP Arnmor Yellow.

Any reporting marks or car numbers? When I read your post, the first thing that sprang to mind were THESE. Evidently, a number of them went to General Electric Railcar (leasing) although I didn’t see them listed on their roster.

According to a discussion HERE, some of these cars were re-built as ballast cars, too.

Wayne

Hey Doc Wayne,

That is almost exactly what they look like except they are open topped, the top 1/4 or a slight 1/3rd is off & capped with angle iron. Same car as your shot… I am so dang Pi$$'d that I do not have DVD clipping SW anymore, I could have easily show all Ya what I’m trying to explain. -Geez

Yes that was the correct car, but it has two bottom bays that are side discharge, & all I can make out on the DVD, (believe me I paused/stepped. & oogled it over & over [not even a car number]) & I can’t make anything out other than “Gate” over the two side troughs.

This was in the (new to me) C-Vision IC&E Vol 2 ‘Iowa’s Main Lines’

Time Code 1:28:23

If you can find that DVD & track to that time code, you will see the cars I have in question.

I wish I could capture an image of that, I just don’t have that SW any more…

What are the reporting marks and car numbers?

I think you’re describing these:

Originally built as open hoppers by National Steel Car for the Algoma Central Railway, rebuilt and reconfigured as ballast cars by Wisconsin Central in the late 1990s (WC bought the AC in 1995).

Thanks Guys,

No, I could not make anything out on the cars, I may have been able to find them if I had been able to mahe out any other markings. The cars looked new to me & were painted in a dark mustard yellow color.

CV_ACR: Your pix are are the ones I think I am looking for, nice find!

Have anything thing like these ever been modeled?

Thanks aganin.

OK, wait a sec. Mustard yellow…

Sorry, my first pic is not what you’re looking for. This is:

Converted from CN or ONT barrel ore cars, also built by National Steel Car. DoctorWayne was on the right track.

Sylvan Scale Models makes/made a resin kit for these cars. Not sure what it’ll look like on the inside of the casting though, since it’s meant to make an enclosed car.

Yup those are the ones!

Thanks Chris, I have saved that like & appreciate the info.

I guess if the rest of the lettering was that faded, it could explain why I couldn’t make it out. (that & the angle of the shot).

I’ll look into the resin kits, appreciate the tip, & your help!
