Hi im new to this forum but i hope you can help me.I recently purchased a “terrain for Trains” High SIerra layout to get me started in this hobby i have admired from afar for so long.work is going well on the layout, but as time progresses, i still have no name for the layout. it will be a fictional railway .can anyone out there think of a good railway name?
pick 2 towns somewhere out west and add “and Pacific” . chances are there will have been a railroad called that , at least on paper , at some time in the past
It looks like a twice around with a single passing siding at a town in the lower left, and a long spur to a mine, industry, or second town in theupper left.
Here is the track plan:
And an image of a “completed” kit:
Hummm, doesn’t say “Pacific” to me. More like a “Central of xxx”, or a “xxxx Creek”, or maybe “Mayberry & Springfield”. What part of the country are you planning on modeling? Any favorite prototypes that will have locomotives running on the track?
well i was thinking of a more east coast name (most of the scenery is inspired by the strasburg railway in pennsylvania) and the layout is based on a valley. it has to be original, too. as for locos, i like the old timey penn coaches but havent picked out a loco yet.also, is it possible to get an n scale shay/climax/heisler ?
Ok then how about
“Lancaster Valley Railway”, “Paradise Valley”, or “Shenandoah & Paradise RR”? I would say “Whitewater Valley Railroad” but it looks like that one is already taken.
Well, while I am certain its been done, geared locomotives generally don’t pull coaches. The passengers could almost walk faster than taking the train.
How about the Maine,Vermont & New Brunswick
M,V & NB

I think Native American names are a good starting point. You can choose from a wide variety, based on the history of whatever region you are modelling. Large or small animal names are also a good starting point. As someone pointed out the last time this subject came up, railroads traditionally take the “easy route” by following rivers and inlets, so adding water categories (river, bay, etc.) to proper names might work out well for you.
So, “Sasquatch River,” “Beaver Bay,” “Navaho Valley,” and thing like that might sound good. I personally called mine the Moose Bay Railroad, with commuter service provided by the Moose Bay Transit Authority.
Paradise Conestoga & Susquehanna Railway
A former traction company that switched to steam in the mid 30’s
Runs from strasburg where it meets teh strasburg Railway
up to west lampeter where it runs right down main street( reflecting its Traction days).
From there it weaves through hilly scenery then curves and runs paralel to East Penn Grant road after crossing Route 272 It folows east penn grant road for a little ways before heading north into pequa Pequa’s has a small station http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/152-120
It winds south through the Lush amish farm scenery before coming out onto Main street in Conestoga but just before where the main goes onto main street theres a spuur that goes down to the silver mine in silver mine park( and theres that mine/branch spur)
after conestoga it runs through some more Lancaster County through safe harbor park and conestoga River park before ending at the interchange with CSX(or is it NYSW)
“Fill in the blank” Valley Railroad, with the blank filled with your favorite river or stream, local, elsewhere or imaginary.
Avoid “punny” or humorous names. They get old in a hurry.
If you’re really Strasburg oriented, you could have the Leaman Place, Geoff’s Grove and Paradise RR. Lots of luck finding appropriate locos!

what about… the squirrel valley RR? ill keep tweaking with ideas. thanks for everyones help so far!
amish valley
The Lancaster Paradise & Cherry Valley
hehe i like that name
Cherry valley is good too
but its your rr
This plan is very similar to John Allen’s first Gorre and Daphetid railroad - http://www.gdlines.com/GD_Galleries/Planning/slides/trackplan.html - probably the basis for it.
Pick a couple of Western towns like Leadville and Durango.
Enjoy
