Huh? You want to learn but rule out the best and most comprehensive source of clear tested information and intelligible graphics? Well ok … then I’d go with the books and videos put out by Woodland Scenics. And “good luck”

Oh! Well I agree that if Kalmbach books are not available in Australia … all bets are off. I imagine that Woodland Scenics stuff is unknown there are well.
Are there hobby shops of any kind in your area? Even if one does not feature trains, our friends the military modelers often have elaborate scenery on their battlefield recreations and there might be some resources there for you.

As a fellow Aussie living in Toowoomba Queensland I would suggest you contact the hobby stores you know and ask them.
Two that i deal with in Qld are in the Brisbane area - Austral Modelcraft and J & J Hobbies, they both have comprehensive ranges of DIY books.
Join a club and attend their meetings as well as help build the club layouts, you will soon learn, and if they are like the club I am secretary of, there will be a comprehensive library available as well.
