So, after being dormant for 3 years, I dusted off my O scale MTH set (bought in 1997 with Protosound). Power up, the light turns on, but nothing happens. No noise, nothing.
After oiling all the conneter points, putting a fresh 9V battery in the tender, turned up the tender volume to max with the manual knob. unplug, replug the transformer and power up. I hear 3 clanks from the tender.
I can’t get the train to go into reset mode. Following the direction in the manual, I tried resetting the CPU, but that did not work, as I don’t think that the train was in reset mode to begin with.
I tested track voltage with a meter, and it is correct. the Loco is getting power, as the headlight turns on and reacts to changes in throttle. What else can I check?

I don’t own any Protosound 1 locomotives, but the problem you are referring to is common, the board gets “scrambled”. Try reading this thread on the “O Gauge Railroading” forum:
I read the thread, how do you solve the 3 clanks of death?
I tried seaching that term there but nothing turned up. A fresh 9 volt battery did nothign for me.
Some of you young fellas need to grow up. When you do, you’ll understand my last statement.
Zach, you have little choice but to get ahold of MTH and get the real gen from their techs. It’ll save a lot of time overall, and you will be assured of getting the help that really works.
Seems other people have the same problem, so I will post thier responce here.
Took a while to figure out thier website to order the part, so I called and talked to thier parts department, and ordered the part over the phone. I should have it by the end of the week, or start of the next.
