Help! Need to find a track plan.

I am having some trouble coming up with a track plan. I have a space (plywood 4X8s, covered with Homosote), 8X20, with full walkaround ability. I want to use basic Lionel 031 tubular with at least one 072 mainline with a reverse loop (for the larger engines). I also have curves in 054 and 042 radius, along with the standard 031. I have several 072 switches, several 042 switches and a multitude of 031 switches, along with 45 and 90 degree crossings.

I would like to use some Lionel trestle sets for elevated sections.

The layout I imagine is similar to the department store layouts of the 50s and 60s displaying Lionel trains and accessories (as many as possible, to include a Transfer Table) and Plasticville. Nothing Highrail or superdetailed. This will be for kids (me included) to operate. All TMCC with any mix of old and new Lionel transformers.

I am having some problems designing a track plan for the above. I would like to operate at least two trains independently and have ‘reverse loops’ so the trains can run in both directions on the ‘mains’.

I am looking for any ideas.

Thanks

You got mail. [:D]

John, don’t know if you get ‘Classic Toy Trains’ but there are often layout articles and often with a postwar touch to them. There are also layout books by Kalmbach - and Greenberg I believe… check your local library first before you get out the wallet.

The other suggestion I can offer is to check out: www.thortrains.net

This is a very helpful website. You can select the type of track you are using and the general size of the layout you want. Check that site out. Even if there are layouts that aren’t exactly to your liking, you will no doubt get some ideas and some inspiration. Even a seasoned modeler like me has gotten ideas from there.

Good luck.

John, i’ll second Brianel’s reccomendation of Thor’s website! It’s chock full of layouts, lots of tips, ideas, etc. Best place to go for inspiration!!
