Mr. Mailman just brought me a package from Walthers containing several sets of the replacement axle gear wheelsets to replace the broken ones sent out on GPs and other locos.
I have 9 to fix, and to be honest I can’t figure out the best way to access the wheelset in the truck. I am hesitant to tear into the trucks as I might do more harm than good, and hopefully one of you good folks out there can give me the straight scoop on the replacement process.
Simply pop the cover off the bottom of the truck, lift out the axle and replace the plastic center section. The wheels just twist in and out. Drop the new axles back in the truck and replace the cover.
I took a small flat head screwdriver and inserted it on each end and gave it a twist. I also easily determined which axle was broken. I suspect a bit of epoxy would fix it, but I prefer the replacement process more.
As it is fairly easy to replace, I believe I’ll only replace the broken ones at this time - and I hope I don’t regret that.
Ok, one down and 9 or 10 to go!
By the way, I use the Polk Hobbies/Aristo rollers on my test track, and this really helps determining which truck has the problem.
The first GP9 had one broken axle, and the others were tight.
The second had three broken axles, and the fourth was tight.
Contrary to what I may have hinted at earlier, check all the axles ( but of course replace only those that need it). Ha, again I may regret that later on…
Oh, don’t forget to lube the new axles, and to run it a bit on the test track to spread it out.
Gee, after two locos I sound like an “expert” (HA)!
