Hi
Im looking to use a 10ft x 2ft6" base i have constructed in “N” gauge,
the height at the back of it being 18" falling away to 9" at the front as there is a top folding down to cover the layout.
The idea is to have loco’s runnng from one level to another using scenery to get from the taller height to base level.
Also incorporating dcc control (ncc)
I am a complete novice at wiring and want to keep things as simple as possible , but at the same time not create any shorts or problems incurred bey cars such as Kto with metal wheels in the case of long trains running across a portion of the layout.
The track i intend to run is Peco code 55 and use the points from the same manufacturer (sorry guys but i live in the uk so its more readily available) with a mix of electrofrog and insulafrog points.
Also of concern in the correct gauge of wire to pick, as a fter all my hard work i dont want it all to turn red when i switch on and use my railroad.
Any help would be gratefully recieved , many thanks in advance
and good railroading to you all.
Welcome to the forum!
The best possible reference for what you want on the web is http://www.wiringfordcc.com/ Here you will find discussion of wire guage, wiring methods. It also has a section on wiring the Peco Insul and elecrofrogs as the electros do require some special hook up for reliable DCC operation. The use of metal wheels in your Kato fright cars does not pose any particular problem. In fact many would say that metal wheel sets are better for DCC layouts because the track stays cleaner.
One thing you will need to pay attention to is if there are any reverse loops on the layout. It does not sound likely based on the dimensions, but these do need to be handled correctly if they exist.
I found the site to be invaluable for my layout. Good luck.
iomtt,
[#welcome] to the forum! Good to have you aboard! [:)]
Another good link for you might be DCC For Beginners at Tony’s Train Exchange web site: http://www.tonystrains.com (It’s right on the front page and listed 2. DCC For Beginners.) It does a good job of explaining the different aspects of DCC. You can either read it online or download it as a .pdf file.

Hello iomtt. I am in a similar position to you with my layout building and live in the UK.
Whereabouts are you?You have been given good advice and I have read all but AWG is not a measure that the shops locally are familiar with.
Here is a link that should help with wire choice in the UK http://www.export911.com/convert/gauges.htm
I’m a Brit also, grew up in Maidenhead area and now have family in the New Forest and Somerset. I try and get back once a year if I can.
Seems there a few brits on the site here on the site then …
Thank you all for the sites mentioned here any others would be most welcome still though,… as i forgot to mention im looking for sites illustrating layouts in “N” gauge for the area i have to work with outlined above …suggestions would be greatly recieved.
Moosecreek … im in Lancashire …and have a good dealer quite near in Sheffield … www.MGSharp.com …where i tend to go often only a small shop but packed to the rafters with goodies.
