I have just installed my first sound decoder into a ho Kato 4400. the decoder is a soundtraxx at 100 lc . the installation has been fairly straight forward, however i am wanting to change some cvs.
I have successfully changed the loco address , but i cant get past cv8. . My dcc system is an LENZ cOMPACT( SAME AS ATLAS COMMANDER}, I have had no trouble getting beyond these cvs with other decoders. Therefore Is it a problem with my decoder or my System. Can i install a resistor into the programming track[?]
Any Help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Download the SoundTraxx LC decoder manual from the SoundTraxx web site and read through it. The CVs that control sounds are in the 200+ range and are out of reach of many of the cheaper DCC systems, but there is a lower numbered CV that can be set so these high numbers can be programmed, and there’s a conversion chart of the CV numbers in the documentation.
Not being able to get past CV8 sounds like it’s programming using Register Mode - ‘CV8’ being actually ‘Register 8’. However, I am not familiar enough with the Compact/Commander to know if it can program in other modes and if so, how you would switch to them.

Ah, I know the problem - I have the same DCC system. What you need to do is put the loco on the programming track, and read back CV1 (select CV1, press the “tick” key, the display will show the current loco address). Now press the “X” key to go back to the list of CVs, and dial upwards. You should now be able to go up past CV8 to whichever CV you want. Hope this is of help!
What a great catch!! Isn’t this forum great?
Nice catch Railroading Brit.
Just thought of one caveat - if that doesn’t work it must be a peculiarity of the decoder. I’ve used that trick to access CVs above CV8 on Lenz decoders but I’ve not tried it on other brands, however it should work there also. Worth a try anyway!
thankyou for your replies, that is the way i normally access cvs beyond cv 9 by reading cv1 first and then the system allows you to go past the cv9, however it isnt working with this sound decoder. Any other Suggestions???
