Help! UP colors

What was the color scheme of UP passenger cars and steam locomotives just before the coming the diesels

Gray/Charcoal

Like so;

Am I correct in assuming the yellow color scheme was not being used until the coming of the diesal engines?

So let me add my question… I have a Lionel UP Big Boy (Lionmaster #38075). What would be the correct Lionel passenger cars to follw this engine.

Thanks, Tom

Tom,

Big Boys never operated passenger trains.

The Yellow scheme was for the Eunits and F’s… Someone correct me if I am wrong please

Thanks LVR. I thought it might be fun to stick some behind it. I guess I just like the looks of those yellow passenger cars.

Tom

Tom,

If i were you, I would go with the Amour Yellow cars

Like so;

LVR,

Thanks, that is exactly what I was looking for. Do you know the Lionel #'s for thos cars and what year they came out?

Thanks, Tom

Tom,

6-39146

Thanks again for the info.

Tom

When the Challenger came to Houston recently it operated today with the UP amour yellow cars. I imagine if they ever used the big boy for excursions it also used the UP yellow cars. Perhaps someone out there will know.

UP Big Boys have never been used in excursions, nor will they be.

They are just too large to run and no turntables are big enought to turn one.

According to some posters on this topic, http://www.trains.com/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=28221
Big Boys did pull some troop trains.

I don’t buy the “too big” excuse. A Big Boy will turn about as sharp a corner as an F3. And turntables are pretty much extinct now; yet UP runs a Challenger.

Well, I should say, revenue service then.

Still you won’t see a UP Big Boy on the road… be happy 844, and 3985 are on the road.
