Help! What Loco did I buy?

I bought a Ho Scale Loco off of Ebay the other night, it hasnt arrived yet, but its driving me crazy trying to identify just what I bought. Its a Santa Fe Loco numbered #106. The seller stated in his discription that it was a Bachmann Spectrum, but wasnt sure, then it showed where he revised his discription to say he actually thinks its an Athearn, its in the Red and Silver War Bonnett scheme, 12 wheels, internal walkways, Looks like a FP45, Ive been all over Bachmann and Athearn Websites and cant find one with that number to be sure. Im just really curious as to what I bought.

If you would provide a link with an image, fans of the Santa Fe might be right on top of it for you.

I’ll put my money on the FP45, b/c they had them numbered in the 100-somethign series I tihnk. I’m no ATSF guru though.

This is a picture of the Athearn FP45, but it has a 4 digit number. Athearn made the F45 as well, which is the shorter freight version.

Can you provide a link to the auction?

It’s probably an Athearn BB FP45. #106 was in the number series of ATSF FP45’s when they were delivered in the late 60’s

It must be a Genesis. The photo I posted before was a Blue Box, but here’s a link to a Genesis version on eBay. HO Athearn Genesis FP45 Santa Fe # 105

Im hoping that it is an Athearn, I only paid $6.00 for it, he says it works, but the seller says that he will gladly refund my money if it does not

It’s not an Athearn anything. It’s a Lima (Italian) “model”. Check this website and page down a bit:

There’s no way you’d get an Athearn Genesis for only $6. Even the earlier blue box version would probably go for $25-35.

It’s not a good idea to buy things from a seller who doesn’t know what he’s got unless you’re far better informed than he is and he has a real gem but doesn’t know it.

Sorry to disappoint you.

Andre

Nope, that’s an old AHM/Lima FP45, and this one looks like a dummy from the black plastic wheels. It doesn’t look like a powered unit.

Edit: [#oops] …great minds think alike. [;)]

Thats what i was affraid of, i had found that Lima site earlier tonight, but still wasnt sure, and I was hoping that it wasnt the Lima, I’ll probably be getting my 6 bucks back, since his discription was way wrong

Andre is right, Busahill, just because it’s cheap doesn’t make it a bargain. At least you’ll likely get your money back. Don’t bother with the other AHM version either, because it’s shorter than scale length, has big plastic handrails, has only has 8 wheels powered and can barely pull itself against a slight breeze. If you’re looking for a relatively inexpensive version, find a good deal on an older Blue Box Athearn unit.

I am probably wrong as I thought FP45’s had four wheel trucks. It looks like an ex Amtrak SDP 45 to me.

Oh, no, not another e-Bay purchaser who bought something without knowing anything about it and then asking for advice —

If it’s a Lima you bought a piece of worthless junk. I purchased two of them decorated for Penn Central in the late 1970’s when I was in Munich, Germany. They had only one powered truck with the motor mounted directly to it. They caught fire after running for only a few hours.

Some users are always bashing Tyco, but Lima was more shoddy than Tyco by a long shot. Lima only ran at two speeds: full throttle and on fire.

4 wheel trucks? Not exactly… You’re thinking of the SDP35s successor, the F40PH… The photo below is actually of an F40PH clone, built by Morrison Knudson on a GP40 frame and classified a F40PH-2C.

I believe that they are the same frame, just a longer hood, extended over what used to be the rear platform.

Busahill, where you looking for a FP-45 by Athearn? Does it have to be a Warbonnet FP-45? Reason I ask, I have 4 Amtrak FP-45 by Athearn that will more than likely never see rail time again.

Long story made short, I bought them around 3 years ago off E-Stupid and did not know what I was buying per say. Engines then self are fine and DC. Passenger cars on the other hand where wore out, it would take more to get them right than what I paid for the set.

If one or all of them might help let me know per PM.

In all there are 9 cars, not just the one shown.

Cudaken- Check your pm’s.

Turns out that it is a Lima FP45, I took the body off and soldered a wire back on and it actually works. I put it on the track and ran it for awhile by itself and then I hooked up 17 cars to it and it pull pretty good, I told the guy that i would just keep it and didnt try to get my money back for it, but I did tell him that I thought his discription was a bit diseptive, he may be honest that he doesnt know much about these trains, but the words “Lima” and " Italy" are plainly stamped on the bottom, clear enough to know that it wasnt a Bachmann Spectrum or an Athearn, But lesson learned, and Im learning more and more everyday on identifiying locomotives, Thanks for everybodys help.

That longer hood houses a second diesel engine…a Cummins (hence the C). The Cummins is used to provide power for the passenger cars. That way, the main diesel can utilize all of its power.

Its off topic, but this made me laugh to the point of tears. Paints a funny visual!

Grats on making it work!
