Help with chassis and shell

Hi folks-need some inf. I have a custom-done Athearn GP40 shell and I need a motored chassis for it. Other than an Athearn GP40 chassis, what would work? Thanks for any suggestions----Doc

Most likely any Atlas or P2K mechanism may need to be cut up to fit the Athearn shell.

There is nothing really wrong with the Athearn chassis. Just file the jacked up edges of the fuel tank smooth and repower it with a NWSL or Helix-Humper motor. And if you’re under DCC, I’m sure someone makes a decoder for use especially with those motors.
No fuss, no muss.

My [2c]

Overland used to make quality drives for various diesel models.
I believe that they had one for the GP-40. If I remember right,
they were something under $100. Try checking their website,
or other Overland dealers-you might get lucky.

There are still some Proto Power West chassis available. I don,t believe they’re made anymore.I have repowered a few Athearns- GP40-2 and 38-2 with them and they fit and run excellent. They are basically nothing more than a reworked Athearn frame, lead is added with a can motor on the corresponding frame for proper fit. I would recommend replacing the wheelsets w/ NWS or equiv.
Bob K,

I’d agree with AggroJones’ suggestion - the basic Athearn BB chassis is a good design. The main problems with it in my experience are the motor (high current draw and sometimes a bit rough) and the driveshafts (3-piece ones that rattle and growl when turning). A good can motor and some new driveshafts will sort out most of the problems - might also be worth fitting Nickel-SIlver wheels (North West Short Line apparently offer these) and “tuning” the truck gearing as has been described here before. This is probably the best value for money way to power the loco. Hope this helps!
