Help with D&H "lightning stripe" gray

I recently purchased an Athearn GP38-2 D&H in the “lightning stripe” scheme. I am in the process of adding details and a decoder. From Walthers I ordered what I thought was the correct paint to match the gray of this particular paint scheme (ModelFlex 165-16188 D&H Gray). When it arrived I thought it looked too dark in the bottle, so I mixed it up and painted a scrap - definitely waaaay to dark - closer to black than gray. Does anyone know who makes the color I am looking for, and what the appropriate code might be?(water based if possible, but I can live with solvent based if need be- I’m just brush painting stanchions and small details) I’m hoping it is something I might be able to get through Walthers, as there is no LHS within 80 miles.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Richard

Polly Scale/Floquil D&H Gray. Though you might have to lighten it slightly.

Thanks, I’ll look it up.

I have a bottle of Polly Scale D & H gray that is a very light grey. I often use it for undercoat, along with L & N gray, whichever I can find. I suspect you have either a defective mix, or a mislabeled bottle.

I use Scalecoat D&H gray myself … not sure about the Athearn engine, but it’s a dead-on match for the gray Atlas uses on their engines - I wouldn’t think the Athearn engine would be much different.
