Help with prototype: PS2 2893 Covered Hopper

I have recently aquired a few of the PS2 2893 Covered hopper, both from Athearn, and Walthers, and noticed they have build dates from '54-67… I have never seen one in person, or in rail service. Does anyone know when these types were retired from prototypical rail service?

Thanks,

Jeremy

The 40 year rule has affected these cars. They must have a major rebuild or be retired. I doubt there are any left in revenue service at this time. A 3 bay, 70 ton, under 3000 cubic foot capacity car - not a lot of need for something like this anymore. Grain needs more cubic capacity, and dense materials can be hauled in the newer 100 ton capacity, 2 bay cars.

Last Summer(2006), a friend who works for CP in Mpls/St Paul mentioned that a lot of the older auto parts cars at the Ford plant with stencils to move them to a specific location after the end of the year(1966 build dates).

Thanks for the reply. So, it wouldn’t be uncommon for these cars to be in use in the mid-80’s? Were these cars specifically used for grain, or other commodities as well?

Thanks,

Jeremy

The Chicago & North Western and Grand Trunk Western PS-2 2893 Hoppers made by both Athearn and Walthers, plus Atlas O, were common on the Grand Trunk Western between 1990-2005.

Canadian Car Lessor PROCOR has similar cars still in service and rolling on the CN (GTW) today.

These cars will most likely end up in Maintenance of Way Service, if not already rebuilt for MOW.
