I am working on a very small N scale layout…A Southern Illinois coal branch…I had planned to Use Walther’s New River Mine very much down sized but its just too big…Now I am thinking of a truck dump…Anybody scratched or kit bashed any thing like this…maybe some Photos…Cox 47
I just quickly perused my Burlington Bulletin #35 covering the southern Illinois coal fields. I didn’t see anything like that. I doubt if any of the RRs serving the area loaded out like that if you are looking at pure prototype operations. However, the truck dumps I have seen were simply an earthen mound or ramp with the track right next to it. Dump truck backs up the mound and dumps the coal into the waiting car.
On a side note, the Chicago and Eastern Illinois had a rail to barge transfer at Joppa where the coal cars went out over a bridge spanning the barge and the coal was dumped down a chute. It would be small enough to model, just not the mine end, but rather the unloading end of coal operations.

Like this one? It’s a scratchbuilt version of one on the former L&N’s CV Sub Left Fork Branch. The site was known as Spencer and the facility known as the Titan Tipple. I used the truck dump to feed a freelanced prep plant around the corner.
