I have just purchased a new computer with the Windows 7 operating system. The problem that I am having is that I cannot post the text in my postings. The post shows up but there is no text in the message. I get a message in a red block stating that “Post message is required”. I have contacted the computer manufacturer but they say the problem is with the web site. I have not contacted my Internet Provider yet.
Look to the top for the icon that looks like a torn piece of paper. Click that and then post a way. I know this because I had the same problem and the fine folks here worked me through it
LION never had this problem. But then again him uses FIREFOX.
IE does have some corporate advantages in that it can be controlled under Group Policy, but I went with Firefox for all of our computers anyway. If some one has problems with IE my response is “We do not support IE: Use Firefox instead.”
For your and everyone’s benefit, the lovely Miss Megan answered my note to CS with the following: Dear Paul, Thank you for contacting us. We have seen a few issues come in from forum users who are unable to post in IE9. This seems to be an IE9 issue. It appears the only options that seem to be available at this point are to. A) Use an alternate browser (Firefox 4 and Chrome function correctly) B) Change your profile setting to Plain Text C) Use IE9 in compatibility mode. To change your content editor to plain text, click the (Edit) button next to the Public Profile button. This option is within the Site Options section. To contact us directly, phone 1-800-533-6644 Mon-Fri 8:30 am - 4:30 pm CT or email us at customerservice@kalmbach.com. We can also be found on the web at http://www.kalmbach.com/help. It is not an Internet Explorer issue, it is an issue with this website. I have never had a compatibility issue on any other website. But clicking the compatibility icon fixed it with this website. You only need to click it once. It will then always use that mode for this site. If you click it again, it will turn it back off.
I finally upgraded to IE9 two days ago to see what all the fuss was about. Sure enough, posted a message and got the 'We dinna ken hew yew aaaare, laddie!" message. {What it said was that I had to enter a subject for this message. Huh?} I found the grey torn page icon, clicked, it turned blue, and I posted without incident.
To be precise - it is an issue between Internet Explorer and the TinyMCE javascript WYSIWYG editor used for editing posts.
The people who make the TinyMCE editor keeps updating it, and hopefully have found a workaround for the way Microsoft has changed the newest version of their browsers.
The big question is whether Kalmback understands that they should to have their own IT staff or their software provider (i.e Telligent in Houston - the people who make the forum software) get an updated version of TinyMCE, and solve the problem Microsoft has created on their forum.
Microsoft may be the ones who broke the functionality, but Microsoft is a 400 lb gorilla, while Kalmback, Teligent and TinyMCE relatively speaking are gnats.
Of course - it may very well be that it cannot be fixed. In which case the “post message” page should get a little text that says "due to a change in the way Microsoft Internet Explorer works editing posts will only work if you put IE in backwards compatibility mode - click here to learn how you do that.
I agree. FWIW, I’ve run into a number of users who think one has to remove IE to install Firefox, which of course isn’t true, but I can see why that thought would make people hesitant. In fact, you can have both programs on your computer and even run them at the same time if you like. IOW, if you frequent a site that IE suits better, then use IE for that site, and use Firefox for the others. Or you can use IE and FF to access the same site at the same time to see which one works better.
FireFox folks. Last time I tried it, a couple of years ago, FireFox did not have the page zoom feature that I use all the time in IE8/9 Does it now? I use a nice big wide-screen monitor and I could never get FireFox to look good occupying the screen well. Has this been addressed in more recent versions?
Can you describe what the “page zoom” feature is/does? I don’t use IE if I don’t have to, so I’m not familiar with that feature. Is it the the CTRL+ and CTRL- to increase or decrease the size of the page view? If so, that’s worked properly in FF, and Netscape before that, as far back as I can remember.
As for the wide-screen rendering, I think that’s more a Web page design issue than a browser issue. I use FF on a wide screen monitor, and how well any given Web site looks pretty much depends on the Web site. Some handle it well, others, maybe not so much…
Well it if FF did have a zoom feature when I was trying it out the tech support at Firefox did not know about it as I specifically asked them. Anyway, not sure why I asked really since IE9 has been really very good and I can’t really see any advantage in switching. I’ll probably download FF and Chrome to give them a spin at some point.
