can i put a dcc decoder in a athern U28C and is it tought or very easy
You can put a decoder in anything and whether it is tough or easy is relative to your knowledge and skills. Have you installed decoders before?
no i have not
id guess its an 80 or 90 model
The first question to ask is if it is worth converting. If it doesn’t perform up to today’s standards, putting in DCC won’t make it any better. I’m assuming there’s room. Do you have a multi-meter? I’m not familiar with your model. I’ve only been around a short time.
IF you do there are two things you need to determine. 1) the number of amps it draws. and 2) whether or not the motor uses the frame to draw power from the track.
Probably someone who knows your loco can tell you if it draws too many amps. Testing to see if your frame needs to be isolated is a matter of putting your probes on the engine poles and touching them to the frame. If you beep, you need to isolate the motor. If not, you can pretty much wire it in without problems.
The motor isolating thing would be the hardest thing. After that it’s just a matter of soldering 4 or 6 wires for a basic set up.
