Ah, yes, a jet snow blower/ice melter. This topic was discussed on the Trains forum a couple of months ago. They were not very successful if the snow was more than just a light skiff.
When not melting snow I would guess this can be used for starting rather large forest fires in the summer months. Also, what is the life expectancy of a wooden tie with this machine???
Well they seem to be successful in some areas. They are mainly used in yards to clear ice and snow from turnouts. The air coming from the jet engine is hot but shouldn’t be a problem re burning ties. The flattened nozzel can be swiveled left and right.
Custom Finishing has an HO scale model. I started mine a while ago but got distracted, must get back to it. I’ve seen and photographed several on CN tracks, never in operation though.
Lionel is supposed to put out a jet snow blower/melter. Didn’t quite look like that, but it’s very similar. It’s in the 2007 Volume I catalog.
