This is like the 2nd in as many weeks! Both involved cab cars, neither derailed like a year ago. Luckily unlike the last one, no one killed this time…[V]
Another Metrolink Train vs. Car Accident
SANTA FE SPRINGS - A Metrolink train hit an unoccupied car on the tracks in Santa Fe Springs early Friday morning, but no one was hurt, authorities said.
The car’s driver, apparently disoriented in thick early morning fog, drove onto the tracks near Norwalk Boulevard and Perkins Avenue and got stuck, so she got out and called 911, said Santa Fe Springs fire Capt. Michael Crook.
A short time later, about 6:40 a.m., the car was struck by the train, Crook said.
Train 701 had left Riverside and was bound for Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, said Denise Tyrrell of Metrolink. The passengers were transferred to train 702 and continued to their destination, with a 35-minute delay. No other Metrolink service was affected, Tyrrell said.
She called 911, yet no one thought to inform the railroad that there was a stalled car on the tracks. Isn’t that one of the primary purposes of 911, to disseminate important information to the correct instutions in a timely fashion? Or was the fog so thick, she couldn’t tell she was on them?
Oh the joys of crossings between Los Nietos and La Mirada. The second next crossing down is Passons Blvd. [151.45] where the kid snuffed himself on a dare. (see earlier forum) - The number (800-832-5452) is on the doghouse (signal cabinet, right next to DOT# 027-649P & MP 153.1 on the side of the box in 6 inch letters)…
The classic screwed-up crossing is Rosecrans & Marquardt [157.8] just towards Fullerton from there. Motorists create havoc there on a weekly basis.
Was it beneath her self esteem to call the number in plain sight?
Mudchicken, thats the crossing that the tracks go diagonally right across the the middle of the intersection isnt it? If so, Oh yeah, I saw some close ones there, I used to go along Stage St there when I was growing up…They were supposed to eliminate it and the Valley View crossing with an underpass but I havent been there in a while to see if they ever did it.
The crossing at Rosecrans and Marquardt is still there. I pass this intersection often on my way from railfanning in Fullerton and my home in Whittier.
Rosecrans & Marquardt is the diagonal crossing - yes. (at the other end of La Mirada Yard)
(Part of my territory 1988-94) - Should have seen the confusion the day the stack train caught the traffic signal people stringing wire without a flagman. Wire got picked-up by the upper part of the top sea-can and thrown into to parallel High Tension electric wires. Whole new meaning to “Blue Light Special”! (City of Santa Fe Springs had two employees up in cherry-picker buckets that needed a fresh change of undies.[:D])
Valley View was grade separated when I left LA for the real world. Rosecrans & Marquardt was still there the last time I was through and motorists continued to take wrong turns and head down the tracks at night or in bad weather along with drunks after closing time. S.F Springs Street Dept would not allow us to paint a heavy white stripe on the edge of paving through the crossing to guide the errant motorists. White paint (w/ glass beads) caused problems to the MUTC adherents while orange/red/yellow/green blue caused alarm to the railroaders.
