Heritage 0-8-0s weathered - with video clips

I have been messing with some steam loco weathering of late and decided to start on my fleet(3) of 0-8-0 switchers - somewhat useful on a switching layout.

All 3 locos have been brush-painted with acrylics (although the IHB loco was pre weathered when I bought it, I just blended in around the new decals - it had been CN)

Here’s the results

And a ‘before’ shot of the as-bought CN loco that became the IHB version.

I also shot some footage of each of the locos last night, for those that can view it.

Switchers really are a masterpiece, although rarely get enough recognition, —nice photos. (who really needs leading or trailing trucks ?)

Nice job!

Thanks guys.

I just located another couple of video clips of the NYC engine, before I weathered it

Great work Jon.
I am most impressed with your painting and weathering skills. Very high quality work for brush painting. Perhaps you would share your techniques.

Yours, Houston Jack

Nice work Jon,
Now you have to tell us about the smooth track work, and are the engines “stock” or did you do anything to tweek them into smooth runners?

Thanks Houston Jack,

I painted the entire loco with a coat of gark grey acrylic, watered down enough that it did not obscure the decals totally (if already applied). I then gave everything a brown/black wa***o get shadows in the seams.

Once dry I drybrushed on various shades of earth brown/white/grey mixture and several dry brushes of rust colours on the tender top and wheels. I repeated this process until I arrived at what you se in the pics.

The hardest part was applying the first brushstroke to a pristine model.

Jon

Nice job on the trains and the video’s.

Larry

Thanks Mike.

Trackwork is Peco Code75 with Electrofrog points/turnouts, ballasted with N scale granite ballast chippings. Power is from NCE PowerPro and turnouts are operated using either NCE or Lenz decoders. The IHB and Erie locos had pickups added to the tender wheels, otherwise the only additions have been the decoder, the kadees and the crew.

The NYC loco was factory fitted with the tender-wheel pickups.

I am impressed…All of my Heritages (0-6-0,0-8-0, and a Berkshire),for the most part run well but all seem to have a little “lurch” at very slow speed.Yours seem to run as well as most of my diesels…by the way ,I love that NYC.Do you do freelance work?

Really nice job. I have a small switching layout, I really appreciate what you have done. The entire scene you have created is great …the old, heavy , urban, industrial/commerical feel. Your great engines are icing on the cake.

Wow. I truly enjoyed those vidoes. Your set up there looks really good. Definalty gave me some motivation. Very well done!

Hi John,

While I think it is sacriligious  to paint a CN Engine anything else but CN I was intrigued that you live in England. I have a CN 0-8-0 but we cannot buy them off the shelf here in Oz… are they readily available in England? We may well be there at years end to visit daughter #1 My web site www.xdford.digitalzones.com

Trevor

Wow the videos where awesome!

I liked the sound on the second one the best.

Do you guys think an 0-8-0 could go thru #5 turnouts without a problem??

Thanks!
