Herzog Cartopper in July Trains

I just got the July trains and I was very excited to see that they did an article on the Herzog cartopper. I had the good fortune of watching these in a action a few years ago, but everytime I try to explain it I have to refer people to Herzog’s website. And because they don’t allow direct links to the section I have to explain how to get to it. The pics from 1988 are just as applicable today. It will be great to just refer people to the magazine article now!

The only thing that was different was that when I watched, it would use the grapple to drag itself across the cars. I only learned about the winch setup through the article.

BTW, you guys might want to add CSX’s trachoe oneday. That was the scarriest operation that I have ever seen![;)]

Here are some pictures of the rampcar and the trachoe. I’m told that they lost one of those when it fell between the two cars. I can see how, as unlike the cartopper, it was really scarry to watch this thing try to cross cars.

Oh and again, thanks, this makes things much easier on me![:D]

I also thought the article… well, pictures were great. I’m still an issue behind but when the new one arrives I always look at the pics and those are very cool! (liked yours also!)
I’ve often wondered how they did that- now I know.
MOW equipment interests me - I would love to see more articles on this!

It is great to see technical puzzles solved!
