Hey! How about buying an F40 PH on Ebay? Not a Bachmann, but a real EMD!

EBay Item Number: 4518838601

I just had to post this!

I couldn’t believe it when I saw it. I see countless numbers of model locomotives up for bid on Ebay, but this!! [:0][:p] Good Goobly!Guess it’s true when they say that you could buy ANYTHNG on Ebay. Including a 16 cylinder Amtrak F40.

She’s number 389. Even has the strobe lights on the roof just like the Spectrum units! Good photos are provided.

Current Bid: $15,000 (the price of a new Corolla)
"Buy it now, Price: $55,000 ( price of a loaded Cadilllac Escalade)

Estimated cost to restore to running condition: $25,000 which is not bad considering the hard beating these units took. A friend of mine who still works for Amtrak told me that F40s on the east coast would travel thousands of miles beyond the point when they needed an oil change. Seems like any EMD in the 40 class was well built.

Hope you guys check it out![;)]

time to raid the couch cushions and find all that spare change

Wow, exactly what I need to get downtown, who needs that public transit crap, and I have a choice of tracks, C.P.R. or Calgary Transit C-Train. Just what is the price of diesel fuel today???

Antonio where would you park it? I wonder what the insurance would be on something like that as well? TB

Interestingly enough the FLNX 418 was being worked on at a little loco rebuild place less then a 10 minute drive from my house. It had a matching passenger car to go with it. and the last I saw of it was being moved on the Wheeling and Lake Erie. Beautiful little engine. THe photo is actually taken in kent ohio at the shop. THough the sellers from kansas I believe. Anyways Good luck bidding.

Think how cool it would be when someone slowed down in front cause you had your lights on, woo hoo you finally could pu***hem all the way to work !

No more rush hour traffic, you could just clear it out of the way. Wonder what size tires to make it road legal. [:D][:D]

Antonio, what is needed here is a joint financial competitive underwriting syndicate.

That’s how it was done in the old-old days so send out an invitation to participate .

Wonder how much postage would be on that? Does the seller say where they’re willing to ship to? [:)]

Hey Guys,

Check it out for yourself. It’s easy, just go to www.ebay.com and on the upper right side in the empty Search Box type in: 4518838601 and click on "Search. It’ll take you right to it!

I could imagine buying it putting it in my backyard and then constantly hearing neighborhood kids asking to climb and “Blow the Horn!”

Would really be neat if a museum or historical society bought and restored it.

These things were a real workhorse. I have heard all the complaining about them being underpowered for years, but they kept Amtrak going for years. They carry some nostalgia for me as the F40PH pulled the twice daily round trip Missouri Mule through my town when I was in Jr. high and high school. I wonder if it would fit in my basement?

I was looking at the listing and saw that in the same area (OTHER) someone had a dome car for $175,000. There was also a set of 4 passenger cars being sold as a set. Sounds like the perfect opportunity for someone to get into the passenger business for real. The details are easier to see in 1:1 scale, and you don’t have to worry about paint hiding any of your hard work! Just need a big enough basement to work on it.

Antonio - How big is the tank on these beasts and what’s the MPG?
JP

I think my wife would kill me, actually I know she would kill me.

Sorry JP,

My American Diesel Locomotive book that lists locomotives specs. goes up to 1973, so the F40 is not in it. The Diesel Spotter’s Guide is probably one of the best sources to check.

I may be wrong, but I’m assuming that since an F40 is a modified GP40-2 with a streamlined carbody, it’s fuel tank capacity “may” be similar. As for MPG, because of the higher gear ratios for speed, mileage is likely better than a typical GP40-2.

Hopefully, someone with a Spotter’s Guide or similar book will chime in with the info.

It’s rather Ironic that even though the F40 is newer, there are still plenty of GP40-2s running around. I see them frequently here in Tampa ( CSX ).

That’s a pretty good price, considering what other people want for them. At http://www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com/new_page_107.htm they’ve got “Low Mileage” Amtrak F40’s 386, 393, 397 and 415 for $220,000 a piece. There’s also plenty of other locomotives and cars and www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com

Ok, now I just need to build a barn in my backyard to house the thing. Then I need to build a spur that goes down to the main…[;)]

Hey, guy’s, I’ve got 20 bucks for the restoration once you buy it, or them.

I’ll pass. Im just happy with the walthers ones I have and the kato’s I’ll be buying in the future[:D]

I was gonna bid but then I noticed the cracked air compressor. I don’t think Walthers carries that part in stock. Such a shame.

[(-D]

Something like that would be neat to have. I’d put it in the backyard and gut the interior except fot the cab. Sell unneeded parts and build a layout inside. Then it could really be called the train room. [:D]
