EDGERTON, Wis. – The president of a railroad that had a train derail behind some rural Edgerton homes early Friday said his crews could have a cause of the crash on Saturday.
No one was hurt but the early- morning derailment came very close to some homes, waking residents at about 3 a.m.
According to federal railroad records, the derailment was Wisconsin and Southern Railroad’s 19th in Rock County since the beginning of 2000.
Just south of the city of Edgerton, Jacki Stockwell and her son Sam inspected their back yard on Friday after a freight train wound up in the middle of it and just feet from their house.
“It was about 4 in the morning. (There was) a really loud bang and a lot of rattling. I’m sleeping right here and it vibrated the house. It’s really scary,” Stockwell said.
Officials said at 3:23 a.m. on Friday, a 62-car train hauling close to 6,000 tons of goods derailed near in a swampy, heavily wooded area, dumping wreckage in the yards of people like Stockwell and her son.
“I can’t believe that they’re right in our back yard – a train,” Stockwell said.
