High Speed Metal Products cars and locos

My son sent me a few N-scale cars that looked promising. After some Googling, I found out that they were made by High Speed Metal Products and were some kind of giveaway from Readers Digest. I’ve replaced the trucks and Rapido couplers on 2 of them and they seem to run alright.

Has anyone else had any experience with these cars and locos?

High Speed Metal Products is a Hong Kong based toy manufacturer, who runs a line of to scale car models. To my knowledge, they produced some N scale cars and locos as static displays, being marketed through various sources. They are not a regular producer of N scale model railroading equipment.

They produced a line of SP locos and cars…they really don’t look that bad, but they must stamp those rivets in those truck bolsters…[(-D]

There are also blocks that prevent the trucks from turning that must be trimmed down. I have a very unusual SP log car in the batch that can’t be converted because of the style of wheel it has

I’ve seen them around for years and my father got them as part of the Readers Digest promotion. If you can make them work, then that’s great. I personally wouldn’t have spent the time to try.

What really upsets me about them is that the dummy SP Loco has turned up countless times on eBay over the years without any disclaimer that it’s not an operational loco.

a quick truck swap and this TOFC is a daily runner.

I also converted the gondola and tankcar.

a couple of the locos fill out the engine shops

Nicely done…have you had any luck powering the locos?

the shell design would require major mods to fit a working chassis inside, just buy a regular loco and use this one for decoration.

I suppose this proves again that one man’s piece of cr…, uh, junk is another man’s treasure.

Oh, the irony of it all! A company named “High Speed” producing wheeled toys that don’t move.
