Historic Rio Grande locomotive may run again
Had the wonderful experience of riding the Cumbres & Toltec in July. Asked a conductor if the tourist line made money? He said “They won’t tell us!” Best part of the trip was sticking your head out the window and having soot in your hair, just like the old days.
Could we see a picture? Most of those 19th century engines were beautiful. I would like to see her run someday.
I would like to see the line between Alamosa and Antonito dual gauged again. That would be a great little shuttle to the CATS.
The 168 is a beautiful locomotive. Years ago the city of Colorado Springs kept it in pristine condition; don’t know what it looks like now.
in Maine were I worked on the Bangor and Aroostook railroad and we had many of these locomotives running on the narrow gauge lines which there are only 2 left today. And im now 80 and worked from 1952-1996 and now the bar is dead and no equipment is left and the railroads split up and its very sad and depressing when you and the people you work with watch all your hard work gone and it took 100 years to make up and only 14 to destroy it its sad.
I forgot just how the engine looked when i saw it in the snow around 1996. Research brought to reports to mind, that the engine was restored with a straight stack, so it looks more like it was when it was on President Taft’s train. It has been a good display.
