I was wondering how many members belong to different historical societies. I plan to model the railroads of Pennsylvania when I get a basement but I think one can imagine how many societies I’m able to join. For the casual modeler are the societies worth the money? I was a member of the C&O HS but not sure I will renew and I see the PRRH&TS has the Keystone Modeler online. Would a better choice be to join the NRHS?
While I am not familiar with any of the historical societies related to the railroads which had operated in Pennsylvania, I am betting that a membership in the NRHS would be a good investment. A lot of railroad historical societies produce some excellent, informative publications. I was a member of the Burlington Route Historical Society for a long time, and I dropped my membership a couple years ago when I was unemployed and needed to make some cuts in my spending habits. Someday I will take out a fresh membership in the BRHS, as it is well worth the $30.00 per year in membership dues. I hope someone else in this forum will be able to give you some additional feedback on this subject.

…We belong to our home area Historical Society…Back in Stoysown, Pa. It’s not specific RR but generally of the Stoystown area…{Founded by Daniel Stoy in 1774}…So it’s been there a while. {The town}.
They do have a restored Railroad depot on their ground site. It is one from the B&O on the S&C branch. We do get interesting articles in the paper sent to us quarterly. Branch is still operational and the depot is on the Historical grounds about a mile from it’s original location. Beautifully restored to original. Remember being in it in the 30’s and seeing the operator working the Telegraph clicker, etc…
I am an avid fan of history in general and the Milwaukee Road in particular. I have found the Milwaukee Road Historical Society to be a fantastic resource for stories, specs, maps, locos, and just about anything else associated with the railroad. I am sure that societies associated with the railroad of your choice can be equally as useful.
