Does anyone know the history of this RR?
Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad…formed by Andrew Carnigie in 1897 to haul iron ore from Conneaut harbor on Lake Erie to his steel plant in Bessemer Pa…became part of US Steel’s railroad empire in 1901 has since changed hands a couple of times and is currently owned by CN…it still hauls coal and iron from Lake Erie to Pittsburgh
Larry, would you know if the CN has let the older motive power “mellow” in their paint scheme, or have they gone to CN black with white snake (actually it’s a very pale gray).
How old are those units in the photo anyway, in your estimation? - a.s.
I get to go by the B&LE roundhouse in Greenville Pa. a few times a month running up the Meadville Line. From what i’ve seen they are still using the orange emd units pretty exclusivley. It seems most of the units are of the SD40-t2 variety. The SD9 in the pic is probably scrap by now[:(].In fact i’ve never seen a CN painted unit there as of yet. Some of the BLE hopper cars are starting to show up with www.cn.ca on the sides however!!
Al as far as i know right now its a “hands off” policy from CN… meaning local managment is still running the show…i havent heard of repainting but i do have to believe that a progressive RR like CN would have retired any !st Gen. diesel’s…remember im far from an expert on regional lines 500 miles from my home[;)]
