Ho guy has the American Flyer Bug +(Pictures)

This summer I acquired a “freebie” American Flyer trainset from a co-worker who was going to throw it out. Since then I’ve got the “S” scale American Flyer bug. Even though I was born in the 60’s, I’ve never seen one of these until now. I just purchased the “Mystic” station off of Ebay for $42. To my surprise, the thing had a full scale 45?rpm record and actually worked right out of it original box! I’m now trying to buy more cool stuff online, like whistling billboards and stuff. I’m going to set up a display at my work building in the window for all to see. Hopefully it will bring back memories to others.

I do have a few questions though… What year was the Mystic station with record player manufactured? And lastly what is the best way to adhere the vinyl windows to the building. I have them all, but they are “sticky” and some have grease on them.

Mystic train station…

And a video with the sound from the station…

Frank,

I think that 755 Talking Station was made from 1948-52, but I am not 100% sure. All they ever need is an occasional drop of oil on all of the bushings and a very light coat of grease on the gears. Talking Stations are bullet proof. Clean the windows with dish soap and water, then use a bit of super glue to attach them. I have the later 799 Talking Station from 1954-56, and I love it. I clicked on your video, but it didn’t play.

[wow]

that was a nice video brought back some yesteryear memories. thanks for sharing.

It worked for me from this post?

Hello and welcome to the world of S gauge(Specificly American Flyer) Great 2- Rail trains. If you have gotten the bug you may want to check out the Flyer DVD by TM books lots of cool S gauge layouts. Also of interest is American Models and S-helper both great manufactures of S “scale and Hirail” trains.

I am a diehard S gauger with a serious O gauge habit.[8D]

I tried it again and it worked.

Driline,

Clean the windows with either the already mentioned soap and water or rubbing alcohol. Do not use “Super Glue” some brands will fog clear plastic, I have noticed this especially when used inside an object such as passenger car windows, I learned the hard way. A great adhesive for windows is “Micro Kristal Klear”( their spelling) by Microscale industries, the same company that makes Micro-Sol and Micro-Set for decaling. Kristal Klear wont fog, and any accidental boo boos will dry clear and not noticible. Kristal Klear can also be used to make lenses and window panes up to 1/4" across, by drawing it into a thin film from the window panes.

As you may know, your 342 switcher is one of the most valuable AF engines. While I’m mainly into “O”, I have 3 ealy-postwar (link coupler) AF steam engines and cars, and run them on a simple 4x6’ layout. I use 2 old AF items on my “O” layout…the water tower and the oil drum loader. Have fun!

I wonder why that is?

I used soap and water to clean the windows, but they’re still sticky. I’ll try the alcohol and see what that does…
