ho-ho-homasote!

Hi everyone,

Hope everyones Thanksgiving was a good one. I went out and got a homasote board and plywood this morning to start putting down the Christmas train with the daughter this year. I tried saving a bunch of old posts but must have missed a few. I just have a simple question. I seem to recall someone saying that for sound deadening purposes it might be better to “not” screw the track down to the board. Is that correct or do I have it backwards? Thanks folks,

PJ

Don’t let the screw length penetrate the plywood and you should be ok.

That is a good tip. I use atlas track on my layout and the atlas screws are long enough to penetrate into the wood using a single layer of homasote or other sound deadening board which is cheaper by the way. However, I used cork road bed under the track to help get the appearance of road bed and that was enough to keep the screws from penetrating the plywood. As far as adhearing the homasote to the ply wood, I used short sheet rock screws instead of glue so that if I wanted to change my layout, I could do so without a lot of trouble. Just back out the screws and your good. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip guys. I have some short screws that should do the trick and not go into the plywood. Plus, I’m going to get some sort of batting to make a “snow” material so it looks wintery to go over the homasote. I already used liquid nails to secure the plywood to the homasote. Wife got ticked because now the house smells like adhesive. So she decided to go visit her mother for a while since the house smelled. At least I bought myself an afternoon alone to do what I want, who cares about the fumes!

My “christmas village” will be a simple one. My wife and daughter do crafts and started making houses and such out of cardboard and painting them. The kid has fun with it so I told her we’d use them under the tree and she was thrilled. Why spend more money if I dont have to right now, I figure!
