HO loco test lead hook up

I’m thinking on certain engines to install a couple brass pins under the tender or behind a fuel tank or somewhere to hook power lead clips to when needing to test an engine upside down at the bench. Seems like a lot of times I have to wedge a special shape probe or clip between things and then the stupid things pop off quite frequently. Any ideas on this? Thanks.

My test power pack has a pair of hook test leads to connect the power to the loco. You can hook around a tender axle or any metal or screw on the frame with them. An example:

You could probably do the same with alligator clips:

You can get those with or without an insulator boot.

I use alligators too, but for example, under a life like gp-20, just no place to hook up to, so try to get them to stay on the current carriers by each truck sideframe = slippery at best. My dcc or dcc ready steamers just don’t have a easy to get at screw that I know of for the engine. I wish they did though. that’d be one pin I’m thinking of. Yep, I use a tender axle too, kinda hard to beat that! Sometimes on the engine I just hook to a part of the valve gear. Thanks Tom! Maybe it’s just me and one of my brain flashes that was more of a shadow than a flash.
