Maybe you could try cutting down on the smilies, eh???
Try the Walthers catalog–they have a whole section on HO military equipment, from WWII to the modern era.
Sorry about the smilies there just fun to put on there. The walthers catalog recently is having less and less military stuff and at that more german army stuff, not that i have anything againt the germans but i bet most of us are modling the US
Really? Maybe it’s just because I skipped about 15 years’ worth of Walthers catalogs, but it seems like there’s quite a bit–and a main reason why there seems to be so much German Army stuff is because the main company that makes all that stuff is German. There seems to be plenty of the basic American equipment, though–modern American equipment is pretty straightforward (Abrams and Bradleys, HMMWV’s, maybe a few M-113’s and LAV-25’s.) And, so far as I know, German army equipment certainly counts as “military stuff.”
What exactly is it that you are looking for that is not there?? Perhaps you could be more specific about what you mean by “military stuff”?
I agree that the Walther’s catalog is the best place to start looking for 1/87 scale military stuff. 1/87 isn’t a popular military modeling scale (1/72, 1/76 and 1/100 are), so most of the manufacturers that do produce in that scale are in there. Of all the manufacturers, Roco has the best tooling and the best selection, but Trident has more of the common modern stuff (Roco targets the combat vehicles, which are outnumbered about 100 to 1 by trucks and “unglamorous” vehicles).
Im looking for HO WWII american army stuff

Hmmm… well, my 2003 Walthers catalog shows that Roco makes a hatful of M4 Sherman variants, half-tracks in AA, mortar and infantry carrier versions, a self-propelled 155mm howitzer, several types of deuce-and-a-half and many types of Jeeps. Trident makes an M7 Priest, and Kibri makes a DUKW.
Heiser’s has a neat selection of American WWII stuff–an ambulance, several variants on the M3/M5 Stuart, an M24 Chaffee, three types of M3 Lee, and eight different M4 Shermans. They also make an M26 Pershing heavy tank and an M45 howitzer, a variety of ARV’s, half-tracks and jeeps, and 6x6 trucks. I think they’re also the only folks who make French and Japanese WWII tanks.eKo makes an M8 Greyhound armored car, an M36 tank destroyer, a DUKW and a bunch of trucks. They also make English Centurions and Matildas.
Admittedly, there is a lot of German stuff–probably because most of the companies who make these things are German–but I can’t fault them for wanting to build absolutely amazing things like Trident’s “Maus” and E-100 supertanks, “Elefant” field guns, Tiger and Panther variants, and the always-stylish SdKfz half-tracks, which were much more rakish with their sloped armor than the boxy American counterparts. I think they even make a V-2 missile launcher and crane/trailer…plus, when you look at it, the Germans used many more styles of tanks than we did in WWII–most of what we used were Shermans, with Lees for lend-lease, Stuarts for reconaissance, and half-tracks and deuce-and-a-halfs to carry everything else. Standardization also meant more efficiency and simpler supply.
There is also a lot more Soviet/Russian equipment available these days–back in the 80’s I had to modify T-55’s to resemble T-62’s and 72’s for HO scale modern military wargaming, add PT-76 turrets to Lynx armored cars to represent BTR’s, and modify the PT-76 bodies extensively (typically with the Lynx turrets, a lot of styrene, and a bit of sprue doctored to resemble an antitank missile) to resemble BMP’s, b
Is it possible to scan the pictures in the catalog and send them to me at adowney@austin.rr.com
On smart fora, the webmaster has gotten around to restricting the number of smiles per post.
Not here yet, hmmmmmm.[:(!][:(!]
I too like to model the WWII era with the idea of transporting equipment to the coast for over seas shipment. I’m always on the lookout for new material. Recently Corgi has released a few models that are very close to HO scale. I bought several of the M4A4 Shermans. They are slightly bigger than the Roco M4A4, but so close that they fit in nicely with the HO scale. I have also put a few captured German/Soviet equipment on the roster from time to time as there was the proving grounds in Aberdeen where the military conducted studies and tests on captured equipment.
DO YOU AHVE A PROBLEM WITH SMILES B[censored]. There’s a R/C M1A1 Abrams tank available from Dragon in 1:72 scale - a little too big, but still, would be an interesting addition to a layout. I found it here: http://www.anticsonline.co.uk/522_1_1030885.html but there surely have to be stockists in the US? I’ve seen the Tigers used on layouts before - someone modelling WW2 narrow gauge in France had one trundling around their layout which was recently in Continental Modeller magazine.
They’re all in the Walthers catalog–you can find it at any hobby shop or you can see it at www.walthers.com which is searchable. Maybe if you weren’t so busy with the stupid smileys you would have more time to look things up for yourself–good luck with your sixth grade science test!
