HO / O

Can you run HO / O on the same track. I believe you can HOWEVER their is an exception can you fine Gentleman ,and Ladies tell me what it is?? (inches)

why would you think different scale locomotives and cars can run on the same tracks?

a simple way to know the difference is that HO is half-O, O gauge is roughly twice as big as HO.

the NMRA Standard trackwork scales page shows the dimensions for the different scales.

Calvin,

You can run narrow gauge O scale on HO tracks. Its called On30. Its commonly used for logging and other narrow gauge railroads and not surprisingly Christmas trains… On30 uses O scale bodies and HO scale trucks. I can happily run my On30 Christmas train on my HO layout. Regular O uses a different size track…

On3 will run on HO track.

On30 will run on HO track (it was designed for that). But the On30 cars and engines are larger (about the size of S scale standard gauge) so you need more side to side clearance and more height clearance. Also, very tight HO curves, less than 18", may give you trouble. And like some HO locomotives, some On30 locomotives may require more than 18".

If you lay your track, you could lay dual gauge track for HO/On30 and O.

Enjoy

HO is Half O. So in theory you could run an HO train between the middle rail and one of the outside rails.

But that of course is a theory, it works better in England than it the United States. Go Figure.

ROAR

I think you may be confusing On30 (also called On2 1/2) with On3. On3 does not run on HO gauge track.

Calvin, O “gauge” is the big stuff you see with the three rails, often laid on a floor. That distance between the rails is very close to twice what an HO scale locomotive would be able to run on. So, the answer to the question as you have written it is ‘no’. The others have filled you in as if you had meant On30, or narrow gauge for the O scale folks.

On the other hand, the British popular scale is called OO, or double-O, and it is also very close to our HO scale. Usually OO can run on our HO rails…usually.
