HO picked corn field

How do I do the picked section of my corn field? I looked at some dried weeds to break in half and plant one at a time, but I would like something easier.

How do they look?? I’ve never seen one. One thing I am in the process of experimenting with is those little (5"x3") painting pads(79c @ Wal-Mart). they seem to me to be like the noch grass pads, about a quarter inch nap of fine little bristles. get rid of the backing and tear off small pieces for little clumps of long grass. I guess you could cut them into strips to place along the tops of furrows to simulate the corn stalks. As I say I’m not really sure what the residue of picked corn looks like, maybe this could be a starting point.

Have fun & be safe,
Karl.

Good question. There is usually a good bit of plant debris covering most of the ground but the long straight rows of stubble are always noticable. With plants every 12 to 18 inches in rows 3 feet apart that is a lot of individule plants to put in. I am planing on having a spring layout. Trees leafed out but fields plowed not planted. I am taking the cowards way out

Heres a picture of what a harvested corn field looks like.

As for how to create it in HO, let me know when you figure out how. Maybe try something like Woodland Scenics grass glued together in small bunches, then cut short and randomly standing up or leaning over.

CNW8835 Thanks for the pic a couple weeks ago. I am preceeding with the corn field. So far I know several things that do not look very good.

standard rows in my area are 30 inches apart with plants about every 8 inches

I’m not sure how large an area you want to cover, but you might want to look at the faux fur at the fabric store. Another possibility is some kind of carpet. In either case, it may have to be painted and dressed up with WS, but you may find a good starting texture.

Ain’t farm’in fun !!! [(-D][(-D][(-D][(-D]

Well, even though I was born and raised in Chicago, after I moved to this area I lived a next to a corn/soybean field for 19 years. After harvesting the corn looked like the photo in the link that was posted by CNW…, but at some point thereafter the ground would be plowed and about all that was left were big clods of dirt with some little stubs of corn stalk sticking up here and there. My thinking is these could be modeled using broom straws somehow.

You find a Chinease farmer that grows those little ears of corn you get at a Chinease buffet and hire him to grow a crop on your layout. Let him harvest them when their ready, collect the land rental fee from him when he sells the crop, and invest the money he pays into more locos for your layout.[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]
